new video into the newsroom from pacifica this morning. you see the powerful waves crashing ashore along the pier. the coast guard is warning people about waves from 12-25 feet high as well as dangerous rip currents for potential beach erosion as well. caltrans will shut down the highway between mud creek and paul slide by mid morning today. gates on either side will be locked until the area is determined to be safe. the storm back in february of 2017 led to one of the largest mud slides in state history in the same area. that storm also seriously damaged the pfeiffer canyon bridge closed for repairs for eight months. caltrans will provide updates once the roadway reopens. >>> these photos of a rock slide on its facebook page on panoramic highway near the ranger station. the chp says it's another good reason to slow down and the roads are wet saying this is certainly not something you want to hit. an officer was able to clear the rock slide. >>> plenty of snow on the ground in the sierra. the same system bringing rain could bring between 2

nbc bay area's christie smith joins us live from pacifica. christie, it's not really safe to stand too close to those edges like that when the strong surf is in effect. >> yeah, that's right. i certainly have been keeping an eye on it. you can hear the waves crashing. and i've seen them in the distance come under the pier closer to where we are. we saw of this she's waves crashing over the seawall. of course big waves are expected and the coast guard has sent out notice urging people to be very careful and the heavy rain hasn't even started yet. at pacifica pier waves pounded the shore. >> pretty high today. >> reporter: aaron lotto tried to catch crab but it wasn't easy. the churning waves kept moving his line as he kept an eye on the water. >> if they're wrecking midway in the pier that's a pretty big wave. >> reporter: by afternoon the gates were closed. the pier empty. the crowd grew on the sidewalk at mie tide to watch the waves crash past the wall. >> it's just really nice to come over here and be next to the fresh air and the waves. >>
