among the actual names, beto o'rourke, 15.6%. joining me now, nbc news political reporter alex, who obtained this report. you got this. tell us a little bit about it. i think beto being in first place there a bit of a surprise, although there's been a lot of buzz about him lately. move on, how big is the membership? who are the folks here choosing him? >> so this is the first straw poll of 2020 of move on members. move on is a very large progressive advocacy group. millions of members across the country. been around for about 30 years. these are kind of the door knockers, the phone bankers, the small donors of the democratic party, or at least a lot of them. these are people who are going to be very involved and active in the democratic primary process, why we're interested to see where their temperature is right now. i was surprised to see beto o'rourke at the top of this list. he's been getting a lot of attention nationally, even though he narrowly lost his campaign against senator ted cruz. move on tends to be on the left side

we saw bernie sanders supporters go after beto. now we see julian castro reacting to beto o'rourke. that's interesting. what do you see? >> you can't underestimate the degree to which the perception is driving a lot of action right now among democrats. we did a story on monday about just the various ways that he could threaten any number of candidates who were looking at running and certainly julian castro is on that list because of their texas roots. if you think about it, john, the castro twins were something of what beto is now a couple of years ago in terms of this appeal, this curiosity about young, up and coming texas democrats. so i think this is in an effort to try to get back some of that attention. it's a pretty shrewd move to do it ten days before christmas when there is nobody else getting in the race that early. we get a couple of days of coverage. it was striking to me that in the story yesterday, which broke this news, castro was made to account for beto. even in announcing his intentions to run for president, he had to answer for a competitor who has not even said he
