ok, so lincoln wins. end up beingd lincoln and douglas in the north, breckenridge and bell in the south. breckenridge wins the lower south with his argument for a slave code. , wherens the upper south there is less of that commitment to protecting slavery at all costs. and lincoln just stops douglas across the country come a sort of. -- country, sort of. he easily beats douglas in the electoral college. 12,oln has 180, douglas has but in fact, in a lot of the states, they ran pretty close. a couple of things to think about in connection with this. douglas -- breckenridge and bell had gotten together, would they had beaten lincoln? gotthree of them together 123 electoral votes to lincoln's 180, so that is not enough, but would the votes have gone to lincoln or douglas or the fusion candidate? hard to say. we really can't know. here is what we do know. there were efforts for them to get together and try to get a coalition together, and the one who blocked it was douglas. he was not going to let the democrat

here is an incredible series of life masks of abraham lincoln. what happened was they put something like duck fat on his eyebrows to make sure when the clay went on it would not strip them off later on and little straws were stuck up the nose to let them breathe. there is a wonderful story of george washington having a life mask put on. as the clay was drying, martha washington walked into the room and started laughing. there is a little crack in the corner of his mouth. because he started to smile. in this case you can see this first life mask of lincoln in 1860. he's just been elected as president. no one expected this. certainly not lincoln. you can see tezz looking pretty good. he doesn't have a beard. he's looking pretty young. he hasn't actually entered into the white house yet, but he's on his way. now look at the second life mask. it is a credit to him that he came back a second time. he had to sit there for something like 40 minutes to let it dry. you can't move. it must have been pretty claustrophobic. he did sit and this is in 1865. ca

he followed lincoln in the lincoln/douglas debates.a lot. and actually followed stephen douglass a lot too. i was lucky to have a fellow studying that turns out stephen douglass and frederick douglass had a quick giving exchange. i never knew that. he becomes a republican for sure in the civil war because the republican party was waging war against slavery. at least it eventually was. and as many in this room know, douglass was a ferocious critic of abraham lincoln because the union government was not moving against slavery. in fact, it was protecting fugitive slaves and sending them back or trying to. but with the preliminary emancipation proclamation, the final proclamation january 1863, douglas not only changed his tune, he appropriated lincoln as he appropriated him. he saw that what was now the civil war had now become one lincoln had not wanted to become. and lincolns famous words, he did not want to become a remorseless revolutionary struggle. but that's exactly what had become. the rest of his life, after 1864 he would campaign every
