. >> abc 7 news reporter matt keller is on scene. he confirmed someone has died. matt. >> reporter: yes. good morning, jessica. very sad scene here. an adult man has died from a fire here at this apartment complex on blossom hill road, west of almadan. take a look at the video we have from inside this apartment complex. you can see where this fire took place this morning. it is a second floor apartment. a lot of people were evacuated from the adjoining apartments here. and they were told to get out at around 4:00 when firefighters arrived on the scene, they were able to pull this man out to the courtyard and perform cpr on him. but sadly, he died this morning. the police department is here on the keep investigating. of course they will try to determine if there was anything criminal involved in this fire and in the death of this man. but firefighters say they're going to talk to us in a little bit. they're still trying to get more information about what exactly took place. this only happened about an hour ago. so this is a very active scene. blossom hill road, wes

matt keller, a about, c 7 news. >> 14,000 homes were lost and many will be hit with another dose of bad news, finding out they are underinsured. many lost everything in the north bay wildfires are still dealing with 14 months after the fact. we have the story from napa. >> the problem is we were dramatically underinsured. >> his family lost a home last october, a complete loss he thought was covered by insurance. 14 months later, he is still battling with farmer's insurance over how much it will cost to rebuild the 3200 square foot house. >> we are in the hole over $700,000. we were not even covered 50% with the insurance. >> in late 2015, he used farmer's own estimator to come up with a replacement value of $661,000. they sent an appraiser who determined the rebuild would cost $1.3 million. according to those who advocate for policy holders, they are not alone when it am cans to dealing with the insurance companies after a total loss. >> this is a huge problem. >> amy is the executive director of an organization called united policy holders. >> for happens when there is a total loss. t

"abc 7 news" reporter matt keller tells us how emergency workers are trying to lower those numbers >> reporter: when you think of highway 17, you might think of this, a crash. the chp said the driver of this suv may have had a medical issue when he lost control and crashed into the overpass of blossom hill road in los gatos. he was speaking with medics at the scene and taken to the hospital. this is not uncommon. even when it is dry, the chp reported seven crashes on 17 by 3:00 today. >> in recent years we have seen a steady increase of traffic accidents on highway 17. >> reporter: today santa clara county emergency workers held a news conference for the safe on 17 campaign. they want to help the 63,000 drivers who travel over the santa cruz mountains every day to make it home safely. the biggest reasons for crashes? >> those things are typically speed, distracted driving, following too close, unsafe lane changes. >> reporter: emergency workers are also at risk while helping people in crashes. medics and firefighters are sometimes exposed to danger in the middle of the highway. >> and

matt keller has the story. >> reporter: at 4:00 a.m., a smoke alarm rang out in the no complex on blossom hill road. a 911 caller also reported smoke coming from the apartment on the second floor. firefighters arrived and went straight into flames while also trying to get everyone out of the building. >> i opened up the door and what is going on and what is going on and the firemen go, get out. it is fi. was able to escape safely except for the man living alone in the second floor apartment. firefighters brought him out and started cpr. they tried to save his life for 20 minutes but in the end the man died at the scene. >> our guys got in there quickly and did their best and our rescue is our number one priority and it is -- and it is disappointing to us and sad for everybody involved when things work out this way. >> reporter: 15 residents from five nearby apartme awe otck could be done and utilities turned back on. the red cross is helping them with money for food and shelter through the weekend. but the loss of a home pales in comparison to the life lost this morning. >> it is tough on
