he was checking out the high surf at mavericks along with a few dozen surfers. the waves have been exceptnally big lately and a high-surf advisory has been extended for the next several hours. dan joins us n siatee.iv surfer and pretty good at it, too. dan, i know it was a treat for you to be out there. what was it like? >> reporter: well, dan, i got to say when you have the camera up to your eye and the boat is bobbing, you can get really sea sick, but i'm fine now. great day on the water. big waves, about 30-foot faces and clean conditions. on the way out aboard the queen of hearts, we got a taste of why the boats couldn't go out yesterday. big swells in the channel rocked our boat, sending one little boy flying. he and his brother asked santa to see t waves. brett flew in from portland just for this. >> i got the notice on friday that the swell was goingke at md i was like, hey, this is a once-in-a-lifetime. she looked back at me and she was like, why haven't you bought your plane ticket then. >> reporter: the first we saw,e a av w20-foot face. then long lull

mike, we've been captivated by the huge waves and mavericks. the competition is not happening. a lot of excitement for the surfers but a high surf advisory as well. >> it continues. downgraded from a warning to an advisory yesterday and that was extended through 3:00 tomorrow morning as breakers could still reach 15 to 25 feet on average and a few rogue waves could reach up to 30 feet up and down our coastline. we're not the only ones dealing with rough surf. down in socal they have it, and it will last through at least tomorrow to 10:00 p.m. around l.a. and santa barbara to even noon friday but notice their wave heights. up to 8 to 10 feet,able not nearly as impressive. that should be santa cruz. george washington bridge, that's fine. stay away from the beaches, if you can, because that is where we're going to find some of the more dangerous areas, except for like right here where you can see in santa cruz where it's sheltered, but if you have other things to do outside. enjoy the mild conditions and increasing sunshine and i do have two chance of rain coming up in the accuwea

conditions were too dangerous for mavericks to be held. that didn't stop some surfers from going out on waves 30 to 40 feet high. they are delaying the contest until at least next month. >>> bill martin is here with a look at the latest on the conditions out there. obviously some concerns. >> especially on the high tide. that is when you have trouble with the windows in pacifico. along with these very large swells that did get up to 50 foot waves. these are some of the pictures from this morning. you can see the size of the surf. it was a very westerly small which breaks big and places like maverick. if they were to have a contest, there is plenty of serve. conditions a rough. you will see on the water, it's up-and-down. the other thing to notice is you see how much these waves, obviously how big they are, they are directly related to weather. storms out on the aleutian island chain that created these monsters, those are the storms that went through the past week and a half. it was dangerous because of that pump. it is real bumpy and very

you see waves like that especially down at mavericks. would you ever go out in that >> i'm going out tomorrow, actually. i will go down the coast a little bit. there are places to serve. this morning, they had 50 foot sets at mavericks this morning. it was a great conditions because it was bumpy. 50 foot waves. it peaked at about 10:00 this morning. look at the buoys. 19 feet at like 19 seconds. 18 seconds is the duration between the trough and the next trough. it tells you how fat a wave is. when it hits the beach it goes like this. it was scary because there is a lot of swell. part of the reason i suspect is that big on the west slope and hits mavericks almost directly. it makes the channel close out a little bit. they did have a contest one year when there was a swell like this and it was very dangerous. we had plenty of rain last night. over 2.5 inches. cloverdale, to winches. a significant rain event yesterday. that is good stuff. 2 inches of rain is good for a one and done. we got a little bit of something happening here. that is a

(grant) mavericks could happen mavericks could happen next tuesday or maybe thursday, according to organizers. that's of course the world famous big wave surf contest off half moon bay. today at ocean beach in the city... the waves were angry... churning like a washing machine. we didn't see any classic surfers out there... but one brave windsurfer was zipping across the choppy water. the national weather service has issued a high surf warning from sunday morning until monday night....with waves breaking between 25 to 40 feet up and down the bay area coastline. forecasters say these intense conditions will bring an increased risk of rip currents and sneaker waves. one mavericks veteran says monster waves don't always make for a good surf contest. grant washburn, big wave surfer:"it's going to be giant we know that but the storm is coming awful close in the wind made the waves are gonna be right on top of it. right through sunday and into the morning on monday. and that means the ocean

mavericks could pick up tuesday and are postponing it. sunday through monday, the highest surf since january 2017. we are talking swells 17 to 20 feet with breakers 40 feet plus, that means not only dangerous in the water but the breakers could cover the sand. so folks, officials are saying you want to stay on the sidewalk and off of the beach itself and on the sidewalks never turn your back to the ocean. a look at high-def doppler shows the showers we have seen in the last 24 hours tapering off and a few lingering showers up north and that will taper off after sunrise. futurecast showing rain at sunday morning. here we are at 7:00 a.m. the north bay getting the heaviest rain. here we are at 3:00 a.m. in san francisco and portions of the east bay and starting to see the peninsula and it sinks throughout the ladder half of sunday and monday morning. everybody will get a dose of that rain before it passes on through. maybe a few lingering showers for the monday morning commute. in terms of storm intensity. a moderate storm for rain and wind

rising along with the waves of surfing fans in the bay area and around the world wait to see if the mavericks surf contest will get the go-ahead and it will be the first time the competition is open to women. we' robert joins us with the latest on the contest. hi, robert. >> reporter: hello. according to jeff ranieri, the big waves are definitely coming probably starting around sunday night and possibly in excess of 40 feet which will be just fine for the surfers. of course, wind and other conditions also have to be right for the contest to go on. if or when it does, it will be a historic moment for women surfers and their fans. the waves have been getting bigger and bigger all along the coast and the world surfing league is trying to pinpoint if any day next week we'll have the ideal conditions to call the contest in world the world's top surfers will have 48 hours to show up. this year, that will include women competing against each other for equal prize money. >> i don't see that many women doing it that off soten so i th it's awesome. >> for the women to do what the men are doing is a coo
