they sent this producer to north carolina in the wake of the governor's election in north carolina in 2016 which was a super, super, super close race. in 2016, the incumbent republican was pat mccrory, running for reelection. in 2016 he lost his seat, the democrat named roy cooper won the governorship instead. it was super, super close. and for a long time, the republican incumbent pat mccrory wouldn't concede that he had lost the governor's race. and in the aftermath of that election in 2016, the north carolina republican party set out to basically try to prove that the democrats must have cheated, that incumbent republican governor pat mccrory couldn't have lost the election. if it looked like the democrats had won, it must be because they had somehow rigged it. and that's where this american life producer zoe chase picked up the story. because north carolina republicans went to a specific county in the southeastern part of the state and they lodged a formal complaint, saying that the democrats in that county had rigged the election and that's why pat mccrory lost the governorship.

if there is an election redo in north carolina. in the state's 9th congressional district there are more allegations of election fraud in a race that a republican won by just 905 votes. and new tonight, dan mccready, the democrat in the race, says he is taking back his concession. here's what we know right now. a political operative. that operative name is mccrae dowless who worked for the republican candidate's campaign-s being accused of using absent cree ballots to alter the vote in bladen county. people who worked for him have admitted to reporters they were paid to collect ballots. dowless has a history of working for candidates who perform much better in absentee ballot results than they did overall. voters say in signed affidavits, they say people came to their houses to fill out, collect and hand in their ballots for them. authorities are investigating whether more than 1,000 absentee ballots tr likely democratic voters in north carolina were destroyed. and also new tonight cnn is reporting absentee ballot irregularities in

is that normal in north carolina? >> absolutely not. let me say something about what the doctor did. he's done a fabulous job on this. i don't think the changeover in the makeup of the board is all that particularly relevant. because the nonpartisan investigators, we have a lot of faith in, are going to continue this work. i do think it's important to point out that the question of certification that has traditionally been a numerical question, under no circumstances are these investigations ending. there are multiple state and federal investigations going on. they should continue. the law breakers should be put in jail. if their allegations are proven to be serious enough, they should spend the entire second term of the pence administration in prison. but that investigation is going to continue. ballot harvesting is illegal in north carolina. it should be punished. but of course it is different than voter fraud which goes into a higher level which would be the tampering of votes, the manufacturing of votes, the elimination of votes. yo
