house speakers paul ryan who said he was the first president he had the chance to vote for. since then, there have been lots of developments in the political arena. senior officials governed as a sensor -- centered moderate republican. a different political environment than now. joe: that's right. he was the last of that generation of presidents, the world war ii generation, to serve. his background was in the moderate republicanism of the northeast, even though he lived a portion of his life in texas where he made his home and where he will return. the party has moved away from that. that was his defeat, in the 1992 first rumblings of change in the republican party toward a stiffer version of conservatism that ronald reagan had embodied and that was carried through subsequent elections. his son, the 43rd president, was considered more conservative his his father, in terms of economic policies. he looked to foreign policy to heke his mark, but it was t domestic policies but probably define him more as a conservative, as opposed to the more moderate stance of his father. haid

because up until january 3rd, this is paul ryan's congress. after that it is nancy pelosi's congress. ralph norman is back with us. has the door reopened, sir, on your satellite window? you can hear us now? >> i can. leland: all right, your thoughts. mitch mcconnell said, basically, us working on this in the senate was useless. we're hitting the pause button. your thoughts. >> well, two things, leyland, it's not about money. the $5 billion is .125 of the total four trillion budget, money that we spend. and secondly it's not about semantics. nancy pelosi said we didn't have the votes in the house to give something to the senate to consider. 217-185 was the vote. 177 democrats, all of them voted ge against it. we've given the senate something and now what we have to do is see something on paper. in the real world, most families that negotiate for a house, i'm in the real estate business, if you don't like the price of a house you come back with

that alluded to the fact the democrats have to learn what paul ryan phased in terms of the fractured party and house constituency or caucus. and does the gop need to do do they get worried about how closely they are aligned with the president because we are not that far from 2020? >> it is interesting when you say that. it is different 12020 comes up versus 2020 comes up 2018. once he is on the ballot, they can vote against him. jeanne sees that in the polling across the board, but the next thing you talk about is how far left some of these people are going to take the house membership and what they want to do. whether it be for the dream act, legalize marijuana going across the states, which is going to be a major issue in the upcoming election. you also have the democrats in their own primary with every issue that they can push to the far left. that is going to be something everyone is going to want to have stake in. whether the student loans, cost of college education, the environment -- everything that comes up as an issue, somebody wants to own it. jason: i'm looking for some op
