american history tv recorded the interview in san antonio, texas. jared eberle is joining us from san antonio, he is a professor of history where he earned his doctorate degree. let's talk about the red power movement. beginning in the late 60's and through the 80's, what was it? the red power movement was a national movement of native americans to build tribal sovereignty and advocate for the rights. issues with federal government, argue for native issues they felt were being underrepresented during the 1960's and 70's. a movement that grew from the protests of the 1960's. civil rights movement, the black power movement, they drew inspiration from that. they try to translate it back to their native communities to build up policies they thought they were lacking by the 70's and into the 80's. >> was there one moment that was a breaking point or tipping point for the movement? you have at -- gradual evolution of it, and in 1969, in november you have native activists in san francisco, california who take over the former prison of alcatraz. they take i

american history tv recorded this interview at the annual meeting in san antonio texas. >> professor marty campbell teaches from loyola. one of her areas of expertise, the immigration of african-americans. what time period are we talking about? what impact did they have an l.a. and southern california? >> thank you for having me. my study begins in 1850 with the very first group of african-americans brought into the state when it became a state. it is a very small group. i study all the way up until the first world war. so looking at the creation of the black community in los angeles, african-americans did a lot to settle their own communities and also to build the greater los angeles area and southern california communities as well. they made a lot of cultural contributions. the closer we get into the 20th century, which is when the big migration happened, there are a lot of contributions that african-americans made politically, you know, and those kinds of things. >> what motivated them to come to los angeles? >> right. it is an understudied area. it is kind of hard to find informa
