i was in east tennessee these last few weeks. we like the fact that you could see the great smoky mountains, and they are not the great smoggy mountains anymore. and the reason that's true is because of the clean air act, more than anything else, which is required coal plants when they operate to put, to put pollution control equipment on them. they can still operate. there's nothing to keep a coal plant from operating in this country as long as you put pollution control equipment for mercury, nitrogen and sulfur on it, and then they can be perfectly clean. that doesn't include carbon. but carbon you can't see it. we like to see, like we like to see the mountains. and decisions that were made that had to do with exhaust from trucks and cars. so america is healthier, cleaner, and we can attract businesses to our state now that we're, now that our air is clean, because before that, that was a problem. and the americans for disabilities act, that was a difficult law to pass and a difficult law for many parts of our country to accept

scott county, tennessee. a very republican county. in fact, when tennessee voted to secede from the union in the civil war, the scott county court met and seceded from the state and declared itself as a free and independent state. when world war i rolled around , the scott county court thought the united states was a little slow in declaring war, so they declared war on germany six weeks before the united states did. they wrote a column about that in the late 1970's, and said, as far as anybody knew, scott county never officially came back into the union or declared peace with germany. my dad got a letter from somebody over there and they wondered if scott county qualified for any foreign aid. scott county was one of the 10 poorest counties in the u.s. when they started the war on poverty. it was pure appalachia when i was growing up. my grandparents had no money, they never had a car, never went on a vacation. my grandfather was a farmer but he never missed a church on sunday after he came back from the spanish-american war. my grand

the state of tennessee passed a law forbidding the teaching of the theory of evolution in tennessee public high schools. the aclu, the american civil liberties union, wanted to challenge the constitutionality of this law. so they put together and financed a case. recruited a tennessee high school teacher, a substitute science teacher, a young guy named john scopes who agreed to purposely incriminate himself by making a point of teaching the chapter from their textbook on the theory of evolution and then urging his own students to testify against him to them out and get him in trouble so that he would be charged with this crime and it would go to trial. that is exactly what happened. this turned out to be an amazing publicity opportunity for the little town of dayton, tennessee. 200 reporters descended on the town in july 1925. a few thousand spectators from various parts of the south and further afield. if you had walked down the street of dayton in july you would have seen trained chimpanzees playing on the courthouse lawn, billboards featuring a picture of a champ drinking the local vari
