minneapolis, -7. this arctic air will continue to filter into the u.s. and will continue to move north east. this is far from over. they are going to continue to see the bitter cold as they were just talking about, and perhaps life-threatening weather. here at home, the entire state is covered in clouds with scattered showers this morning. if we move closer to the bay area, we do have a few bits left as we get through the second part of the morning and early afternoon. once the clouds clear out of the way, we will pretty much be in the clear. here is the northbay. a few scattered showers. right along the higher elevations from sonoma valley into napa valley, petaluma, maybe a sprinkle. along the coastline and the peninsula stretching across the central band along 580, it looks like east of livermore between livermore and tracy, shifting into the south bay. perhaps, a sprinkle there. maybe, milpitas, union city area. today, partly cloudy skies expected by the afternoon. this looks to be a morning event. a very weak system, as expected. the next system exp

i want to give you guys a look at downtown minneapolis. it's a bit of a ghost town today and the reason has everything to do with the weather and the wind chill. we actually will see a lot of hustle and bustle here in downtown minneapolis at the mall even in january in the middle of the week because it's 20, 30 degrees, sometimes warmer. that's not the case today and the weather has everything to do with that. schools have closed today through tomorrow. we've had grocery stores close and kind of shut down early, at least this evening shutting down earlier than normal. businesses on the mall are closing early and our ski hills across the twin cities, the recreational side of winter, they aren't open and that's not something i've ever seen during my time as a reporter. think about that. in fact, with that wind chill this evening we will be one of the coldest spots on the planet. in minneapolis for kpix news, i'm john laurentzen. >>> i'm paul deanno reporting live from san francisco where it's 56 degrees outside we can say with a smirk becaus
