>> i thought it was very strong speech for joe biden. he's defining the terms of this debate as that the -- the crisis for this country is division and he is the person that could fix that. i think there is a lot of people who feel that way, who are just sick and tired of this and looking for their -- yearning for normalcy and yearning for optimism and someone who can beat donald trump. so on those measures i thought he did very, very well. and, you know, there was this feeling that when joe biden got in the race this could be -- that would be his top moment and he would go down from there. his launch has exceeded expectations and the number of donors he's got has exceeded expectations and the number of followers and his staffing level is very good. and i think this speech, too, was just another strong moment. his candidacy and front-runner status is for real. long race but it is for real. >> it is a long race. some 200 plus days until the caucus there in iowa. in the meantime, he did mention and i've seen so many of these kickoff speech

i think joe biden is formidable. if you look at the last two presidential cycles we had a party that had a very large number of candidates, and 2016, you had front runners and folks like jeb bush but i use the term front runner loosely. it sort of fell off by the time the first debate happened and it was kind of trump in the lead from there on. i think the 2012 republican primary provides an interesting comparison. we admit romney and the in the joe biden seat but he hung in there even is a crowded field there was lots of turns, rick santorum, newt gingrich, other people picking up individual states. but mitt romney holding onto his court and slowly but surely growing it as they approach the convention and wound up hanging on. gerry: they say joe biden has been running for president since william mckinley has been present. he's been around a long time. half a century and politics. is it possible that some of the people -- democrats looking for a fresh face, who of the fresh faces is the most plausible? >> are certain
