chris nguyen is live with the latest on this case. chris? >> reporter: hi, alma. peoples did not enter a plea in court this afternoon. currently at issue is whether or not is he mentally competent to stand trial with many people now wondering how long it will take for this case to proceed. this afternoon, sunnyvale resident isaiah joel peoples show little emotion as he walked into a courtroom to face multiple charges including eight counts of attempted murder. investigators say the army veteran was heading to basebal into a group of people at the sunnyvale crosswalk. prosecutors believe at least two of the eight victims were targeted because of their race and religion. >> their life and working on their health. so they're in various rehab centers trying to get better. >> reporter: the sunnyvale department of public safety believes the crash was intentional based on the lack of skid marks at the scene. family members maintain peoples has ptsd from being in the military. his defense attorney is looking at other angles. >> we're asking to have some brain scans done t

abc7 news reporter chris nguyen has this story. >> reporter: during an evening drive on the fourth of july, tense moments for a tesla driver and his young son all captured by the company's century mode tule. >> he's coming close and hits my car. i hear my son's forehead hit the backseat. >> reporter: watch as john's de hill road in los gatos only to be struck a few seconds later by what appears to be a ford f-150. >> i realized that thias speeding pretty aggressively. >> reporter: this view from the dash cam shows the truck almost lose control after the impact. >> frustration, thankfulness at the same time to make sure that we're fine. but even more anger as this guy just is speeding off. >> reporter: someone who saw the video called in a tip to the los gatos police department. that led them to a house in campbell friday afternoon where they found the truck and its driver, 32-year-old dennis someones of san jose. he was arrested for hit-and-run and reckless driving. for now it is too early to tell if this was an accident or intentional act and if drugs or alcohol had something to do w

more on the story here is chris nguyen. >> reporter: we are on santa cruz avenue which is the main drag downtown. if you look behind me you can see the electronic message board alerting drivers that in less than a week four blocks downtown will be converted to one way as the transformation gets under way. starting tuesday july 8th your drive downtown will look different. santa cruz temporarily turns into a one way southbound street through the end of october. city officials are using the opportunity to reimagine the future of downtown with wider sidewalks which shay say will hopefully lead to santa cruz avenue becoming more of a community gathering place. the owner of the redemption retail downtown is glad the city is thinking outside of the box. >> going around. people are leaving but essentially for us we see it as a chance to evolve. and chance to try attracting business. >> reporter: protected areas converted from parking spaces will provide additional seating. the city is also adding a new bike lane and diagonal parking to insure that no spaces are loss. with traffic already a mess
