cristina rendon is live to bring us the story. >> reporter: good afternoon to you. this is a really big deal for the city of oakland, the first time they partnered with the city of emeryville and cal tran. look at the cabins here, on tour now. the mayor is inside one of them showing them off. we got a peek inside earlier. this are two cots in each cabin. this is a very big deal. it's one of the largest sites so far. this is on the oak land emeryville border, the cabins will provide shelter to 76 people who have been living underneath interstate 580. we understand this is made possible by not only the cities but as well as corporate foundations like target and the oak land chamber of commerce that donated funds and supplies to make the cabins a reality. >> this is the city of oak land's 5th cabin community we are opening today. this innovative way of resolving our most unhealthy and vexing encampments is continuing to show tremendous success as well as inspire collaboration and partnerships. >> reporter: this is the first collaboration between cities of oak land emer

cristina rendon has more on the story. >> reporter: they said they compared groups. from those who battled the tubbs fire and a group that did not deploy. 180 volunteered to provide blood and urine samples for three weeks after the fire. the majority, 150 of them, were spotted to the tubbs fire. the study found high mercury levels in firefighters who were at the tubbs fire. and they also tested for raised levels of compounds in gear. these are men and women who are urban firefighters. and they ended up providing mutual aid. some were there for two days. others five days. and these carcinogens can let -- lead to cancer. it add, there really is a lack of protection for firefighters at these kinds of fires. >> we're really hoping that this study will be the impetus for more studies and for change. and seeing if anyone can come up with new type of fire equipment for us. >> the chief says it does not exist. but they're hoping manufacturers or scientists can create some sort of protection or new type of gear. she adds that firefighters in the city and other cities have had

cristina rendon is live with this on going dispute. >> reporter: good morning, -- a very rough process trying to find a site for this navigation center. residents are not happy and they are letting city leaders know about it. hundreds of people packed the city council meeting in free month, it overflowed in to the courtyard, a discussion wasn't on the agenda but it did not stop the protesters. they are opposed to two sites for a new shelter, one is in the dakota neighborhood , the other is here behind city hall, both locations are city owned land. >> city hall is the only site where residents are walking, not driving. my personal experience, my wife walks in the morning, she got heckled not once or twice but three times right outside of city hall. >> reporter: city leaders say they narrowed down the city hall site and dakota because they are near services. the city wants to open the center by next year saying the homeless population has jumped 27% since last year. we understand there will be two meetings next month for people to come and voice more of their concerns or maybe suggestion

cristina rendon is at oak land airport right now. you have more on this report. >> reporter: good morning. oakland made it clear sit a sanctuary city. the mayor's office says this issue is of great concern to the mayor. the bay area news group reports nearly 1000 flights were coming in and out of oakland used by u.s. immigrations and customs enforcement between 2000 10- 2018. nearly 43,000 people were moved through the airport during that time. of that group, almost 27,000 people were sent to be deported. the other 16,000 were reportedly transferred to other holding facilities. there is concern from some of the community about whether this activity violated oakland sanctuary city policy. >> individuals picked up by ice are often shipped out of this country in matter of hours and don't have the ability to appear before a judge. it's really important that we do everything we can to ensure there is transparency with respect to the process. >> reporter: in a statement, the mayor's office says this issue is of great interest to the mayor

ktvu's cristina rendon in san francisco with the investigation into what happened. we understand some people were injured in this. christina? >> yeah. good morning to you, pam. there are still remnants of this crash that you can see where we are. take a look. this car going so fast, it knocked this tree onto its side. there is still debris everywhere at the corner of carol and third street. let's get right to the video to show you exactly what happened. take a look at this. the entire front end of a mazda sedan has been entirely ripped off by impact of this crash. this all started around 1:30 this morning. we understand, that's around the time that first responders first got the call. and we believe. it's unconfirmed by police. but we believe that the car ran into a fire hydrant, right here on this corner. and it caused water, just gushing into the air. a geyser that we estimate may have been about 20 to 30 feet high. at this point, it's unclear, in terms of the victims, what their injuries are. we know at least three people were treated for injuries. we are not sur

and ktvu's cristina rendon, live at the san jose mineta airport, where some of this chase happened as well. tell us more about what happened, christina? >> reporter: well, good morning to you, pam. a lot of people we have been speaking to. we're showing them this video. they can't believe what happened. when you look at that video. that car was not going the speed limit here at terminal a, mineta san jose. take a look at the video again. [ sirens ] >> the car doesn't even slow down, when it hits a speed bump, driving right through terminal a here at san jose minet a. then it bottomed out, kept going. did not slow down at all. this video was taken around midnight. and a witness says the car was driving erratically, over speed bumps. thankfully, the airport had low traffic. so no one was hurt here. then it apparently kept going. we mapped it out. and it's about 6 1/2 miles here to where the crash ended. we believe this may have started on northbound 101. the chp says they were notified of the pursuit in 101. after a car failed to yield. and it's unclear how many people were inside that
