what do you remember most clearly about john paul stevens? >> i had the remarkable opportunity to interview him in 2007. and he talked extensively about how he believed that he had not become more liberal, the court had become more conservative. he still called himself a judicial conservative. he insisted on the government's duty to govern impartially. to gerrymandering to other forms of corruption and also his strong dissent in bush v. gore. it's really remarkable to read his book, the makings of a justice, reflections on my first 94 years. he gives an inside account of bush v. gore in that book. he says the arguments were never raised before they appeared in the opinion, and he said that there was a serious factual error in the majority opinion that undermined its basic reasoning. so he was incredibly candid. this book is a remarkable guide to his insider thoughts on nearly 35 years on the bench. the book is called "the makes of a justice," whether or not my vote to uphold the validity of capital punishment in 1976 was correct. i am now con
