you knew him, you knew ross perot. what are you thinking on this day. >> well, the first time i ever met ross perot, i was a budget hawk myself and spent most of my career fighting to get us to a balanced budget, which we ultimately achieved. but i remember him showing up in my office one day and he just walked in. he was not a tall guy. he was kind of a short little guy. but he carried himself in a big way. and i remember he said as my assistant said, hi, i'm ross perot, i'm here to see john kasich. where is he? so she opened the door and there was perot. no security, all he wanted to do was come by and talk about his great concern. he was fixated like a lacer beam on the nation's debt and it was interesting, first of all, wolf's review was fantastic, because you didn't realize all the things that ross perot did. >> i agree. >> he certainly was a little bigger -- lived a life bigger than himself, whether it was the p.o.w. issue or the issue of trade. but debt was the thing he focused on and he captured people's attent

my mom was born a few years near ross perot. i knew about him as a businessman sem kid, because he hired a lot of people. he didn't leave texas. people running all over the country. that was not his style. why did he get 90% as an independent? >> by going from television studio to television studio and delivering the same message in a folksy way. everybody wanted to book him. he was this hot phenom, new face. >> harris: could you do that today? >> you could come but you couldn't win. he didn't have to run in the primary because he does dropped into the race in the spring of '92. he was such a force that when he opposed nafta, it was the famous debate between them, which is the tv spectacle of its time. >> harris: i'm writing things that sound familiar. his intense focus on military and military veterans. he was bringing things into scope that we are talking about currently with this administration. >> absolutely. he was a business success. he didn't really have a lot of political skills, but he had that sort of plain knife and s

ross perot was born in 1930 in texas where his father ran a cotton mill. he graduated from the navel academy in 1953 and spent four years at sea. he started electronic data systems in the early 1960s. it later became aun of the world's largest technology service companies processing data. perot became a billionaire in 1994 when he sold to general motors for $2.5 million. a couple of years later he started a second data processing company, perot systems corporation. it sold to dell in 2009 for almost $4 billion. in 1969, president richard nixon asked perot to seek better treatment for u.s. prisoners of war in north vietnam. he traveled where he mess with ambassadors from russia and north vietnam. perot made headlines again in 1979 when two eds employees were taken hostage during the revolution in iran, he organized and paid for a successful private mission to rescue the men and bring them home. perot ran for president again in 1996, but this time he was barred from the debates, so he bought network air time and broadcast a series to express his vision for a

february '82, ross perot was on there. two days later, george bush, his opponent, pat buchanan, bill clinton, paul tsongas was making noise. paul went on larry king's show and larry king said, would you think about running for president? perot said, i'll tell you what, if you the people are that serious about it you register my name in all 50 states, and i'll do it. it was taken as an empty promise, sort of a nonsense. and yet, in an overnight, we didn't have the internet like we do, a grassroots movement sprang up. they handed in 258,000 signatures in texas for ross perot. by the late spring of '92, he was running in first place in the national polls, ahead of bush, ahead of clinton. there was serious talk that he could actually win the presidency and the electoral college. of course, as the scrutiny intensified things changed for perot. i think there were a lot of precursors in that 1992 race. >> it's interesting, we think about all of the years that changed politics. a lot of people obviously look back at 1966, for the

henry ross perot was born june 27, 1930, in texarkana, texas. what his family lacked in money, they made up for in values. >> i learned that it doesn't matter what happens to you. what matters is, did you do the right thing? >> perot was a proud eagle scout who studied at the u.s. naval academy in annapolis. he was a battalion commander. after four years, he worked in the navy. where he fell in love with a young teacher named margo birmingham, who would become his wife. they went on to have five children. has first civilian job was a salesman for ibm. but he had bigger dreams. in 1962, with a $1,000 loan from his wife, he started the electronic data processing system. something he would sell years later for $2.5 billion. in 1969, the defense department recognized perot for his work, getting aid to p.o.w.s in iran. two years later, he bribed an iranian revolutioniary group to get two of his employees to escape. he paid the group an undisclosed amount of cash. and said the u.s. government had no knowledge of his plan. >> american dollar is not as
