terry mcsweeney has the rest of the story. >> reporter: two americans teenagers behind bars in rome in connection with the fatal stabbing of an italian police officer. according to italian police, the teens have confessed after they were arrested after friday in a four-star hotel in the district of rome. at this point details are unclear but according to the police, this was a drug deal gone wrong. the officer who was killed was investigating the theft of a bag. there was a brief hearing in rome afterwards. the attorney for one of the suspects said his client was exercising his right not to answer questions in court. in addition to murder, both suspects are also being investigated for attempted extortion. in italy, much of the attention is centered on the victim. he was a 35-year-old officer named marrow cerciello rega, he was a newly wed who had just returned from his honeymoon. his killing prompted an outpouring of grief across the country, flowers left at the scene of his death. the interior minister offering condelenses on twitter. terry mcsweeney, "nbc bay area news." >> we are ge

. >> i'm terry mcsweeney. a crash where two pedestrians were hit. sergio just arrived on that scene. what can you tell us at this poi poi point. >> you can still see all the pieces of this crash. that started because this black tesla over there ran a red light here at the intersection . you can see right there is where it's resting. i want to show you as it was crossing through the intersection it was hit by this gray mini cooper. when it spun out unfortunately it hit two pedestrians in that intersection. they were thrown quite a bit. one of those pedestrians, unfortunately, did not survive their injuries from this crash. the other pedestrian is currently at the hospital undergoing treatment. the police say that those two people may be tourists. they're in their 50s. they were hit by the tesla as it spun out. the police estimate, based on some surveillance video they have from this intersection, that the tesla was going through this intersection at about 45 miles an hour. they also have a couple of witnesses. but i have to tell you just a few minute

terry mcsweeney and anoushah rasta have the evening off. it's been six days. and this afternoon a lot of uncertainty remains. the quake hit on july 4th. one day later a 7.1. first the positive news. there have been no deaths. only minor injuries reported. there is considerable concern because aftershocks continue to rattle the region. we have the update. >> reporter: when thursday's quake hit, the red cross said several dozen people came to the shelter they set up. but when friday's 7.1 hit, about 150 people came to the shelter. many of them are choosing to sleep outside because of the continuing after shocks. during the briefing today, city officials say they are making good progress in inspecting a lot of the damage across ridge crest. but their big concern is they just don't know when the regional hospital is going to fully re-open. meanwhile, there is lots of people in ridge crest trying to get back to normal. >> we are an isolated community. >> reporter: this community church pastor started his sunday church service with a big thank you. >> thank you to t

i'm terry mcsweeney. >> and i'm anoushah rasta. we continue to follow that breaking news. two pedestrian were hit in the area of taylor and street. sergio is live tonight with new information. sergio? >> reporter: well, the police are still piecing together a lot of the details, but in this investigation it seems like they have a whole lot of information to help them in this investigation. i want to show you the vehicles involved. over there in the distance you can see there is a black tesla. that tesla, according to the police, went through this intersection without stopping at the red light. it was clipped by this gray mini that you can see right there. and when the tesla was hit, it spun into the crosswalk and hit two pedestrians. one of those pedestrians is dead. the other is currently at san francisco general hospital. let's go ahead and show you some video we shot just minutes after this crash. at this point investigators say that they actually have four different angeles of this crash. they also have video to them available that was shot aboard that tesla vehicle. w

let's bring in nbc bay area's terry mcsweeney. you were here as this all happened around 5:40. you seen a lot and heard a lot of the stories including one of the workers at the festival. >> this is ryan wallace. he said he and his coworkers were in a really good mood. half an hour away from wrapping up a terrific three days at the gilroy garlic festival. then the gunfire erupted, and he found himself grabbing children in danger and running for his life. >> it was horrifying. >> reporter: ryan wallace was part of a crew from auburn, california, running rock climbing equipment for children. he thought the fist shots were fireworks. i'm terry mcsweeney. >> and i'm anoushah rasta. tonight the type of car she was driving and where she got it from is coming into focus. >> nbc bay area's sergio quintana arrives on the scene shortly after the crash. now he is at san francisco general hospital with that part of the story. sergio? >> reporter: police say that pair had just started crossing the street in the tenderloin in the crosswalk when they were hit by a careening model -- tesla model 3. police walked the women accused of hitting the pair out of a nearby hotel in handcuffs. they have not released her name, but say she is in her early 20s and is cooperating with their ongoing investigation. she is charged with rung a red light and mcdonald's machines. she was behind the wheel of this black tesla model 3. she blew threw the red light at o'farrell and taylor in the tenderloin. >> the mini cooper had the green light, made contact with the tesla as it ran the red light, causing the vehicle to hit two pedestrians in the crosswalk. >> the san francisco medical examiner
