but i'll admit, it's a scary thing to be a foster family. all the what-ifs of a situation make for uncertain living and that still shouldn't be a reason for people not to foster. we see groups of siblings split up because there aren't homes large enough to fit them, we see kids with special needs constantly moving from home to home because there's not enough families that can provide them the level of care they need. and then there's the big question everyone asks, well, i don't think i can do that, what if you become emotionally attached? when it was time for my foster brother to reunite with his biological family, it broke my heart. but looking back, the most rewarding part is i know we made a difference and it meant something. he left my home in a better place emotionally and physically than when he came in. there's honestly no way to show someone that they're truly valued and loved without becoming attached. it means something to take someone in and show them that they are important. so the real question becomes, what if you don't become

[laughter] it also fostered my belief in the opportunities for doing good through science and medicine. so not surprisingly, when i left the lab back then, and then finished medical school, and then did all my clinical training, and then became a medical oncologist, well, i quickly became frustrated. taking care of patients with cancer is an immense privilege, a wonderful thing to do, and i really enjoy clinical oncology and the practice of medicine. but i also hated that it felt like a recurring nightmare of giving cancer patients the same treatments over and over again and watching it fail. firstinds me some of that generation robot that vacuums the floor. it bumps into the chair, moves away, bumps into the chair, goes back again. it was very frustrating. the drugs didn't really ork. it was very tough to be in oncologist back then and it was frankly worse for the patients. that fact sent me to the lab. i wanted to do better. i wanted to use science to improve care for patients with ancer. so i left clinical oncology to become a molecular biologist and cancer geneticist in earnest. at
