this is gary tuchman, cnn, marsh harbour, bahamas. >> that's an unbelievable scene. joining me now, good to see you. the devastation is just remarkable. and the u.n. is saying at least 70,000 people are now homeless on the abaco islands. and in the grand bahamas. you just heard from gary tuch n tuchman's piece, i mean, cou countless people perished in the abaco islands. what can be done for the survivors? the 70,000 people now left homeless. >> so thank you for having me on today. the government of the bahamas leading the support, we predeployed staff a couple of days before the hurricane hit to be able to move as quickly as possible to respond to needs in response to requests from the government. i led a team yesterday north of marsh harbour to some of the most severely affected areas. the damage to houses was catastrophic. our challenge now is delivering life-saving food, water, other types of urgent assistance. mobilized maybe 15,000 meals red i do eat. they've been moved out to the worst affected areas. the pan american health organization in concert with the min

let me now go to gary tuchman who is on a boat in the bahamian waters who i believe has been bringing aid in. what's going on? >> well, the men and women of the u.s. coast guard are working to help the people of the bahamas affected by hurricane dorian. we are steaming through be hammian waters on a 154 foot cutter headed for marsh harbour. we're still a couple of hours out. before that earlier this morning we stopped at the bahamian port i can't name for security reasons, but the coast guard men and women delivered 1300 pounds of material for temporary housing consisting mainly of tarp. when we get to marsh harbour, a search and rescue mission will begin with the 25 coast guardsmen and women. two paramedic are on this cutter to help and treat injured people they find. there will be at least seven other coast guard cutters at the abacos and grand bahama island. the coast guard has told us they have saved 164 islanlives on th islands and delivered supplies. the people i'm with are ready to save more lives. they're noble people and ready to get to the people in a couple of hours when th

coast guard search team just found the remains of someone who died in the storm and cnn's gary tuchman is where them. >> reporter: this is the u.s. coast guard and a city of miami paramedic from the fire rescue unit looking at the rubble in marsh harbour bahamas, one of the most beautiful cities on earth and now it's hell on earth. this is immense rubble. it is impossible to tell how many houses were standing. the houses are flattened and you get an idea right here of what so many of the houses in this area look like. we came here to this part of marsh harbour because we were told by the local fire department that they expected there would be many bodies in this area. indeed, five minutes ago these coast guard and paramedic personnel found the body of a female just past the house that you're looking at. you can see in the distance there, more u.s. coast guard personnel looking around, helping the bahamian government and helping the bahamian police look for bodies and also treat people who may be hurt. we've been traveling with them on a coast guard cutter, 25 coast guard men and women

joining us non ophone now is gary tuchman. he's with us on the phone. gary, you just heard patrick's reporting and you're with the folks going in to help, right, to bring in this aid, to rescue people to retrieve the bodies of those who died in the storm. what can you tell us? >> reporter: that's right, poppy. working to help the victims of hurricane dorian. and our cutter which launched from miami beach but was based in key west yesterday, we got here last night, there are 25 coast guard men and women and two paramedics from the miami fire department because the main purpose is search and rescue and help the people who they find are injured or trapped. and we're going to be working at abacos. we arrived at nightfall last night and it's too dangerous for this area to get close. they did take a small aluminum boat which is on the cutter for an initial check. four coast guard men were on that boat to a southwestern portion of the abacos. it was there to their surprise and a bit of happiness is there wasn't tremendous damage on the southwest coast. some of
