we'll go straightaway now to nbc news correspondent morgan chesky who is in nassau in the bahamas. we have been hearing all morning about the 165 miles an hour winds, but where you are things are looking pretty good. so what's the deal, set the scene for us. >> yeah, geoff and yasmin. the good news is we had the outer bands of dorian make their way through here last night. keep in mind, those are tropical force winds less than 100 miles an hour but enough to bring plenty of damage here. we saw trees down, light property damage in and around nassau but the brunt was felt 90 miles to the north of us on abaco island. that's where dorian brought wind gusts of more than 220 miles an hour. and sustained winds of 175 miles an hour. that's the equivalent of an ef-3 tornado but sustained for hours on end and that what has caused the devastation in that area. our first images of what the storm left behind is simply stunning. a lot of people trapped inside homes surrounded by water, even turning to the phones to issue pleas for help as they post on social media for someone to please rescue th

so that was just part of nbc correspondent morgan chesky's report from the bahamas last night. let's check in with msnbc meteorologist bill karins. >> hey, guys. just waiting for the new update. we're waiting, 4:46. sometimes in about 10 to 15 minutes before the top of the hour we can get the new update from the hurricane center. my graphics will update live here. you may see it over my shoulder before i do. 120 was the current wind speeds. we're waiting to see if that happens. there is actually a hurricane hunter aircraft starting to make its angle of approach towards the eye. what they'll do is fly into the eye, drop a sensor and then that sensor will tell us, you know, the pressure reading, the temperature and the max winds. we'll know if it's actually getting stronger or weaker. it appears to be getting weaker, we just don't know how much weaker. we'll also start to get an indication if it's actually moving or not. on radar, not very impressive. to have a hurricane only 100 miles off the coastline of florida, you know, it doesn't look like much. not many of these rain bands
