nbc's morgan chesky and gabe gutierrez on the florida coast. al, tell us about the storm and its extraordinary path and its speed, or should i say its slow march. >> it's crawling. it's picking up forward speed. right now, category 2 storm, but we tell people don't pay attention to the category. while it's important, you can get a lot of damage with storms that are not a 4 or a 5. this is a category 2. 105 miles east of ft. pierce, florida, with 110 mile per hour winds. and now its forward speed moving northwest at two miles per hour west palm beach all the way up past charleston. we've got hurricane watches all the way to cape hatteras. inland we've got tropical storm watches as well. that speaks to the size, the growing size of the storm. even though it's in a sense weakening down to a category 2, it actually -- its wind fields are growing. in fact, here's the official path from the national hurricane center. by thursday morning, it is a category 2 storm just outside of charleston. then cape hatteras by friday morning and then out and past th

>> morgan chesky in the bahamas, thank you for that reporting. i want to turn to former fema administrator craig fugate. craig, the situation in the bahamas looks extremely dire, particularly in abaco. what do you see as the most important priorities right now, and do you think the government there has the capacity to make sure that real genuine humanitarian disaster doesn't set in now? >> well, the bahamian national management is coordinating a lot of things. first priority is going to be search and rescue, recovery of those that we lost and still reaching those areas and start getting supplies in there. and i think this thing we got to remember. this is the bahamian led response. the united states has already set the u.s. agency for international development office of foreign disaster assistance a disaster response team to work with the bahamian government as resources, teams are starting to flow in the area. but as you just heard, until you can get into, you can't get much of a response going. that's going to be the first priority, get back on

. >> nbc's morgan chesky is now in nassau after making it the battered great abaco island. morgan? >> reporter: good morning. those search and rescue efforts going round the clock at this point in time. we do know there are still hundreds if not thousands of people still unaccounted for, specifically on abaco island, where the visuals coming in today were simply stunning. in the bahamas, it's the nonstop mission with no end in sight. this family pulled frone by one just in time. rescues by air and sea, searching for people on the devastated abaco island. >> it looked like we were bombed. >> reporter: thousands are still missing, and the death toll rising. >> it was absolutely apocalyptic, and that word i've used deliberately. >> reporter: people here still in shock. >> i have to hold my baby up for like an hour or two just to keep her from drowning. >> reporter: those lucky enough to be rescued rushed to this nassau hospital. >> one lady saw her family washed away in the sea. so you have to deal with the emotional aspect as well as the physical injuries. >> reporter: one survival s

craig. >> morgan chesky there for us from the bahamas. right now, rasheema ingram joins me on the phone. she lives in freeport. she is there on the bahamas. first of all, where are you right now? you safe? >> i am safe. i had to relocate but i'm safe. my family is safe. we're staying at my colleague's house right now. we're on freeport ridge and we're doing well. >> you know, we've been watching the pictures and images come out of the bahamas over the last two days, it just really is breath taking to see what this storm has down your island what did you experience? >> what was so significant was the wind. we have never heard wind like that, the gusts of the winds were significant. and we thought that would have been all to it. we thought that may have been some flooding. the fema as well as the government did a good job of trying to get people on those coastal communities to move out of those areas before the storm came. but what was unexpected was the extent of the flooding. many of the communities and the neighborhoods northern part of

i want to turn to morgan chesky who is in the bahamas where we saw the worst of the storm. morgan? >> we're here in nassau because the weather conditions have finally cleared up, we're getting a true sense of the search and rescue mission for abaco island. four coast guard choppers are making nonstop runs going to abaco, picking up the injured and bringing them back here where they can get in these ambulances and get much-needed medical treatment. one of the officials described the injuries as what you'd expect. trauma to the body. cuts, broken bones in some instances, and we're also told there were several pregnant women who sheltered in a clinic in marsh harbor on abaco island who were able to get here safely to make sure they're okay. dorian has dumped feet of water in grand bahama where flooding is a serious concern. the airport there still under water. and that means relief efforts through airplanes not going to be able to reach them meaning either boats or helicopters having to go in there to help those people try to move on from this as dorian continues to inch its way from

our nbc's morgan chesky is on the ground in nassau. morgan, tell us more about the rescue efforts. >> reporter: relief agencies and rescue efforts have gotten a foothold in the hard hit areas. the federal agency usa i.d. setting up a camp in abaco island and they will use it as a base to go to the devastated neighborhoods where they'll search door to door through the rubble to make sure no one is left behind in the hard hit areas. >> and today i'm announcing $1 million in additional humanitarian assistance to help people in the bahamas affected by hurricane dorian. >> reporter: coast guard choppers, we can hear them flying nonstop. they'll be rescuing the critically injured, people still trapped and bringing them here where they can receive medical care from doctors in nearby hospitals all across nassau. hundreds, if not thousands, are trying to leave the islands of abaco and grand bahama because there's simply nothing left behind for them. hundreds of people were taken to florida where they can start the long process of recovery. >> r

we'll go straightaway now to nbc news correspondent morgan chesky who is in nassau in the bahamas. we have been hearing all morning about the 165 miles an hour winds, but where you are things are looking pretty good. so what's the deal, set the scene for us. >> yeah, geoff and yasmin. the good news is we had the outer bands of dorian make their way through here last night. keep in mind, those are tropical force winds less than 100 miles an hour but enough to bring plenty of damage here. we saw trees down, light property damage in and around nassau but the brunt was felt 90 miles to the north of us on abaco island. that's where dorian brought wind gusts of more than 220 miles an hour. and sustained winds of 175 miles an hour. that's the equivalent of an ef-3 tornado but sustained for hours on end and that what has caused the devastation in that area. our first images of what the storm left behind is simply stunning. a lot of people trapped inside homes surrounded by water, even turning to the phones to issue pleas for help as they post on social media for someone to please rescue th

steph, we'll send it back to you. >> thank you, nbc's morgan chesky in nassau in the bahamas. nbc correspondent mariana atencio joins us now from cocoa beach, florida. mariana, it might not be raining but it certainly is windy there. >> reporter: the wind has picked up, steph. and our crew and myself have also been caught in these rain bands because the storm, it might not be getting to us just yet. but as we have seen, and i just spoke with the mayor of cocoa beach, he said the storm is 40 to 50 miles off of here. that's a little too close for comfort he said. the waves have certainly gotten bigger. this is a big surfing destination. you don't really see people out here right now because this is under mandatory evacuation. these barrier islands are so vulnerable to what a storm like dorian could do because they have the ocean here on the one side, and then they have bodies of water like banana river. they have something called mosquito lagoon as well. so when you talk about flooding and you talk about storm surge, the water is going to come in through here. these are some dun

joining us from nassau, bahamas is nbc's morgan chesky. it's finally cleared up where you are enough so that rescue and recovery can begin? >> reporter: ali, steph, that is exactly right. fortunately the coast guard has been able to conduct missions as of yesterday evening going nonstop making runs to the hard hit abaco island and bringing the injured back to nassau where they are taken to hospitals for much needed medical care. a coast guard chopper just flew over us and a team of four are working in conjunction to make sure people still trapped on abaco island are able to get off and get here as fast as possible. still they have their work cut out for them. we know when dorian hit abaco it had wind gusts upwards of 225 miles an hour and a sustained wind of about 175 miles an hour. meanwhile the storm surge was more than two stories high flattening a lot of buildings in the area. when we arrived here -- another chopper taking off right now -- you can see this is one of the volunteer helicopters. there is no military marking on that. there

morgan chesky is in nassau located just south of where hurricane dorian is doing the most damage. morgan, what are you hearing from officials there and how on earth are they planning to get to the people in the middle of the storm where we already know you can't get to those airports and certainly boats can't get there? >> yes, steph, that has been the ongoing problem since dorian made its way through the northern part of the bahamas. we're told the coast guard was just able to move in yesterday to start to perform rescues in that hard hit abaco island. as it stands right now we know they've medevacced 19 people from abaco to a hospital here in nassau six of those people in critical condition and the rescue effort is going to be ongoing throughout the day just because of the conditions that dorian provided made it so dangerous for even rescuers to go by air or sea to approach those hardest hit areas. right now the coast guard is using helicopters to land in those areas that are cut off from all other rescue efforts as it stands right now. the prime minister telling me that he does

so that was just part of nbc correspondent morgan chesky's report from the bahamas last night. let's check in with msnbc meteorologist bill karins. >> hey, guys. just waiting for the new update. we're waiting, 4:46. sometimes in about 10 to 15 minutes before the top of the hour we can get the new update from the hurricane center. my graphics will update live here. you may see it over my shoulder before i do. 120 was the current wind speeds. we're waiting to see if that happens. there is actually a hurricane hunter aircraft starting to make its angle of approach towards the eye. what they'll do is fly into the eye, drop a sensor and then that sensor will tell us, you know, the pressure reading, the temperature and the max winds. we'll know if it's actually getting stronger or weaker. it appears to be getting weaker, we just don't know how much weaker. we'll also start to get an indication if it's actually moving or not. on radar, not very impressive. to have a hurricane only 100 miles off the coastline of florida, you know, it doesn't look like much. not many of these rain bands

here is morgan chesky. >> reporter: william moldt was last seen in lake worth, florida back in 1997 he was placed on the missing persons list and for 22 years his family never gave up hope even when his case went cold. but after a discovery on google earth, when a man who used to live in this gated communit was looking at his old house on the 3d satellite program. as he zoomed in he saw what appeared to be a car submerged in the pond he was so surprised by what he saw, he called up a frien with a drone and when they both flew over the water they could see the car hidden beneath the surface. when a police dive team recovered the vehicle, officers found a body inside. >> that's so shocking. >> once it became a crim scene they had us move away so we wouldn't disturb any evidence. >> reporter: the medical examiner's office confirmed it was moldt inside the car but how he ended up there is still unknown. >>> tonight fans are mourning the loss of eddie money. he planned to become a police officer but ended up recording some major music hits. here's joe fryer ♪ >> reporter: his look and sou

lit's go to morgan chesky with more. >> how are these recovery efforts going? >>. >> the recovery efforts are starting to ramp up. we finally have been able to reach some of those hard hit areas. one of the national federal agencies that are going to be here. they're setting up a camp on abaco island. crews can go out into those hard hit parts of the island and do those door to door searches. people searching through the rubble to make sure nobody is left in need people potentially trapped in those hard hit areas. these are the people that are covering every inch of those hard hit areas. if anyone is in need of rescue, grigg them back to nassau where they can receive medical treatment. if they're not injured, they can start to take the next steps in their life. we know that we have tons of supplies landing in multiple agencies. thousands of people are being taken off abaco and grand bahama, where flooding was a significant concern. we know 1100 refugees were taken off grand bahama. that's going to be an on going effort. as you've seen the scenes of the differ s
