and we start in the state of texas. the cities of midland and odessa, the latest mass shooting that took place in that state, the shooting leaving at least five people dead, 21 others injured after a gunman started firing from inside his car. this happened on saturday. you see one of the scenes here, and it is a large scene there between those two towns. the attack started after the texas department of public safety troopers initiated a traffic stop. the gunman pulled a rifle, wounding a state trooper. and after that he drove off and continued firing, eventually hijacking a mail truck. the rampage ended when the shooter was cornered and killed by police. a man who knows one of the people shot spoke with cnn affiliate kosa. he said that his friend actually had saved his life, performing cpr on him months earlier. >> all i know is that they were on their way home, him and his wife, and he got shot. i guess it went through the door of the car and shot him right in the, his side. and my shop foreman is in there right now, a

the fbi has sent resources to midland/odessa, texas. a law enforcement official tells cnn, those resources, include forensic examiners. cnn contributor andrew mccabe has this to say. each time you have one of these incidents, you have an opportunity to mine it for all of the intelligence you can. and some of that is understanding what that person's progress for trajectory was leading up to the event. are there signs or signals that people exhibit as they are moving down this path toward radicalism or extremism. this will be one more doesn't to build out that entire timeline, that picture, that rich picture of this person's background and what they were saying, what they were writing, trying to act about this event. i think one of the things we've seen since the last two mass landings, is forward activity. you see people being arrested after exhibiting or violent materials. there's no question that law enforcement is taking those threats and that intelligence very seriously right now. there's no single thing we can do to guarantee that w

that's west texas in oil country. we are getting from the department of public safety there, this began with a traffic stop. the trooper unit there had two troopers tonight. and during the traffic stop prior to the vehicle coming to a complete stop the male driver and only occupant pointed a rifle toward the rear window of his car and fired several round towards the patrol unit. we'll break that down in sequential order. what do you take from that? >> first off, looking at the two-person unit, the interesting part is you have a contact officer and cover officer. immediately upon that attack you would expect the cover officer is broadcasting a call for help. nobody on the law enforcement side, the fire department or emergency medical services can understand that call of shots fired officer down send a shiver down your spine. the immediacy of the reaction to that to bring in the troops, if you will, to make that assistance is of paramount importance. from all the information i have been receiving, this suspect fled. he
