new reporting just came in from our team that covers bernie sanders. quote, we do not know where senator bernie sanders is. we do not know what state he is in. we do not know if he is in a hospital or not or what his condition is. the campaign says no comment if he is still in the hospital, and no comment on whether there would even be an update today. from a communications perspective, what do you make of that, elise? >> from a communications perspective it's doing bernie sanders no favor for his campaign staff to look like they're covering up his whereabouts and that they have something to hide. they just need to be forthright and honest. plenty of people undergo heart procedures, have stents. he could be out on the campaign trail again in a couple of weeks. honesty would really be the best policy so that it doesn't get deflected and turn into a bigger conspiracy than what the truth could actually probably dispel. >> why would they do it, even, is what i'm trying to figure out. why not just come out and say, here's the deal, we told you what happened

i think people do sense some vulnerability with bernie sanders. he was in the hospital, he had that heart attack. it's important to remember being on a debate is intellectually grueling, but it's also physically grueling. you have to stand up there for three hours, and this is a 78-year-old man who just came out of major surgery. so i think some of the candidates lower down in the rankings and the polls smell a little blood in the water with him, and they're probably going to use this as an opportunity to sort of move up. the question is, can anyone with a dozen candidates on the stage make an impression in that time? and if they do, will that balance be enduring? when a candidate has had what we like to call a moment, it really hasn't stuck with them. and it has stayed in this framework we've seen for months. i think the pressure is on the four candidates who have not made the debate stage. this is a do or die moment for them tonight. >>> cnn michael warren, rachael bade with the "washington post." they need to get comfortable in the hours ahead.

bernie sanders was just released from the hospital in las vegas. his doctors now confirm he did have a heart attack. let's go to our senior washington correspondent who is watching these developments. >> reporter: senator bernie sanders was released from the nevada hospital as we saw him walking out giving a sign that he's with his wife jane there. saying he's feeling strong and good. we're learning for the first time in a statement from his %-p. we have known for the last couple of days he had a stent that was put in after a procedure but we did not know he had a heart attack. here is a part of a statement from his doctor that the campaign is releasing this evening. it reads after presenting to an outside facility with chest pain, he was diagnosed with a myocardial infarction. that means a heart attack. this will raise questions about when he will get back to work. he did say he is looking forward to getting back to work. he had heart attack at the age of 78 that will linger over his candidacy as we get more information about how severe that was.

bernie sanders is filling that role. how does his family feel , though, about people are goins after coroner incidents? is not a small thing for a 78-year-old person. >> harris: that's at the medical experts are saying. because we are not doctors. it >> chris: i mean, i'm a fake doctor. is it not a little reckless to say to somebody, "keep granting it out to come and go out there to do this," when you know he can't win? >> melissa: i don't think he knows he can't win. i think he's really running. everybody who goes out there and spend that much time and is not enthusiastic, i bet he thinks he can win. i also think, in all sincerity, it is so much more interesting with him on the campaign trail. >> chris: i like it. >> melissa: it so much more interesting. but not even from -- i don't mean that sarcastically. he keeps the ideas, he keeps it interesting. there are those people out there. >> harris: his energy. >> melissa: they keep it lively. >> harris: i remember standing, jessica, at the dnc convention. of course it was
