cummings. elijah cummings is an individual who has done so much for his community, has done so much for his country, and his state. mr. ruppersberger: i had the honor of serving with elijah cummings for over 25 years. we also went to the same high school, city college. congressman cummings received attention on the national stage as chairman of government reform committee and as such he was fighting for our democracy every single day. signing subpoenas in the hours before his death. he spoke truth to power and was taking on what many of us see as dangerous threats to our system of government, divided by our forefathers into three equal branches. but even as he commanded a gavel, as chairman, he never stopped fighting for baltimore and the little guy. chairman cummings can rest easy knowing that he did everything he could in his time to restore the principles of our democracy and equality. his passing is a tremendous loss to myself, personally, the city of baltimore, our state and our country. m

[applause] he told everyone how in baltimore, are efficient. and effective. [applause] what we do is about saving lives. he came to countless events to speak on the opioid epidemic because we need it

cummings. you know, this is a title that we confer on all kinds of people who get elected to public office. [laughter] [applause] pres. obama: we are supposed to introduce them as honorable. [laughter] pres. obama: but -- but elijah cummings was honorable before he was elected to office. there's a difference. [applause] pres. obama: there is a difference if you were honorable and treated others honorably. outside the limelight. on the side of a road. in a quiet moment, counseling somebody you work with. letting your daughters know you love them. [applause] pres. obama: you know, as president, i knew i could always count on elijah being honorable and doing the right thing. and people have talked about his voice. there is something about his voice. it just made you feel better. you know, there is some people that have that deep baritone, a prophetic voice. and when it was good times and we achieved victories together, that voice and that laugh was a gift. but you needed it more during the tough t

[laughter] in my old age, i'm the warm up act. i'm glad to do it. anyway, elijah was great. and he ended with his quiet and reasoned and rhythmic voice growing into his booming voice by quoting that wonderful verse from the 40th chapter of isaiah. those that wait on the lord will have their strength renewed and will wind up with eagles. he kept doing more and more. the crowd was going crazy. over the course of these last few days, i've had a chance to think a lot about elijah's life. he really did sort of mirror isaiah. who had one of the greatest one-liners in the history of human affairs. when the lord asked whom shall i send and whom will go for me. isaiah said here am i, lord, send me. elijah cummings spent a life saying send me. [applause] an entire lifetime. it's not even a teenager when he hauls down to the swimming pool and joins a group to integrate it. for his trouble, he gets banged on his head leaving a lifetime score wh

what elijah cummings is doing demanding and sending out subpoenas and directives to go in letters and record amount to look under the books without any evidence of wrongdoing by the way, presupposing the outcome on fishing expeditions to go into the lives of individuals and if you have proximity to president trump, watch out, that's a prime target, the agreement which nobody has seen light of day between elijah cummings, nadler, adam schiff and i want to say there's a fifth one in about how they will do investigations and how they will do impeachment, this people layed this all out before the 116th congress even started but all premised on the idea that they were going to be essentially the campaign research arm for the democrats, i think that's what they are doing right here right now, there's no justification or evidence to -- to justify a lot of it, they are just literally want to find out what -- what -- let's go figure out then and then figure out what the crime is but, it all start with the idea and the premise that we don't need government, you need to look at people, individua

knew elijah cummings. it wasn't odd to see him grocery shopping at the local giant store. people knew him by name. >> accessible. >> very accessible as many people in washington are not necessarily so. >> yes, well, you know, in washington, the congress, especially the house of representatives, they work tuesday through thursday, and they go home and they have fundraisers. and elijah cummings went home to talk to people, to see people, to live among the people, that he lived with his entire life. >> when we talk about what this means in terms of the democratic caucus, some of the personal issues that he championed, the civil rights movement, he championed also black lives matter, in fact, a quote where he said our party does not believe but understands that black lives matter, but we also recognize that our community and our law enforcement work best when they work together. that in itself is revealing about what he tried to do, how he tried to position himself at these polarizing times in our country. >>

cummings didn't respond with an insult. he extended the olive branch and said, mr. president, we met to talk about the problems of inner cities. i still want to work with you on those issues. >> and as good of a gentleman as he was and as big of a man as he was, it does i think, aaron, sort of capture the smallness of the president's language. the president of the united states saying he came from this rodent, rat-nested city to try to disparage democrats. but it was taken as a personal insult and so many of his constituents there, the president nothing scheduled for him to go to the hill at any point tomorrow. those plans could change. we have received out to the white house as well. but it is that sort of disconnect between president trump and a man, you know, like elijah cummings that a lot of people are noticing and focusing on. >> i think if you compare the president's relationship with cummings to cummings' relationship with mark meadows, which everybody's focusing on, obviously mark meadows is not just the president'
