i remember the original photograph that i took of her. and the banner that read -- bring all of the troops home. at this point, the guard seemed to have completed their objective. they were supposed to disperse the students that gathered as a crowd in front of taylor hall. and yet they were still advancing. what more do they need to accomplish? what was there real objective here? what they really wanted was for this all to end so they could go home. guard continued their marching, they reached the corner of taylor hall. i witnessed the group at the rear turn in unison. some crouched down while others stood and the gunshots began. of course, i thought they would be shooting blanks. i took a photograph as they turned and fired. and i stood there. a moment later i thought to myself, i better get down anyway. i probably look like a good target with these cameras around my neck and back then, the lenses were long. we did not have tiny cameras. around my left arm cameras and camera bag and went down to the ground. just as i was getting down and

i tried to retire again after that and then realized i was too early to retire then i took a job as a partner at the group i am now as the investing partner investing in companies in us and around the world and continuing in the same space i decided to be in with telecom. that world has evolved and it has been great fun along the wa way. i had a chance after the fcc to serve on the advisory board where technology was not that unimportant so it has been great fun i'm sure i'll think about retiring again sign on - - soon with another career but trying to answer the question that josh posed but what was it about my clerkship that helped inform the rest of my career and the three ideas that i point to our discipline and as we all know that is a key attribute of surviving a job at the supreme court much less doing it well any mistake would be immediately exposed you learn analytical rigor. and humility and you learn that in a few different ways and part of that is a conveniently talented people that you work with with colleagues and on the bench that's a good thing to carry around with you

and so today if it's okay i would like to talk about the lessons that i took from my clerkship experience and how they shaped my practice and in the cases i chose to work on and lucky enough to engage with. as i i think most clerks to justice kennedy would say the first lesson is the civility, both virtue and a paramount concern and oppressing hard questions. accusations of hypocrisy and more and more americans are quick to assume the worst of their fellow countrymen. working for justice kennedy is sustained education in living civility and the way you treat us and the way he expected us to treat each other and the way we approach the cases before us and the way we interacted with other chambers. as carried through to my own practice, work on issue that raise tough questions of the interception of lgbt rights and religious freedom, represents victims of attacks in charlottesville ku kluz klan, white supremacists, these are not always lawsuits that they show civility, middle ground and we can find common values and virtues and go from there. one of the lessons i bring to all of these cases
