the placement of the thresher memorial in arlington national cemetery is a momentous achievement. thank you, kevin. my name is tom wiley. i'm very humbled and privileged to stand here before you as a thresher family member. my brother, john joseph wiley, graduated with distinction in nineteen sixty one from the united states naval academy in 1951, and was on the thresher. he was my older brother, my role model, and my hero. on april 10, 1963, there was a national disaster. the united states navy lost a lead ship of the world's most advanced class of nuclear powered submarines, attack submarines, and its highly trained crew. portsmouth naval shipyard lost highly skilled raytheon company also most- highly skilled employees lost highly skilled employees and friends. the shipbuilding community was in shock. former thresher crewmembers lost submariners in a boat on which they proudly served. the nation lost 129 men, defending our country during the cold war challenges with the soviet union. and the 129 families lost loved ones. as thresher families know, no family, no individual is eve

i knew that arlington and the old guard had their origins in the civil war. that it had been robert e lee's plantation to be exact it had been his wife's plantation and he had lived there with her through their life, but i did not know all of the origins of it. i do not know for instance that arlington national cemetery was the first national tribute to george washington. that robert e lee's father-in-law, george washington custis had been they adopted child of george and martha in washington and he styled his home in arlington and opened it up to the public as a tribute to our nation's first president. i also did not appreciate the old guard history. the old guard is literally the old guard. it goes back to 1784 and has fought in every major war up through world war ii. it's only become a ceremonial unit since 1948. so i did not know that deep and rich history but i learned at altering the research for this book and i hope everyone will enjoy that. >> is readers will find outcome of the senator not only serves in the ford theater, but then he comes back and

he says he woke up one night and recalled a meeting in the town of arlington where he lived at the time, and a debate that took place in arlington about whether or not to rebuild the school that had recently burned down, or whether the children would be bussed to the next district and taxes would be saved. he remembered an incident when his neighbor rose to oppose the idea of building the new school. what he remembered was the rest of the meeting listening respectfully, hearing the point of view and the gentleman lost of the vote, the town voted to enact the tax and to borrow $80,000 to build the new school house. rockwell made a series of studies after. he started sketching and creating images. we have some of his sketches showing rockwell wrestling with the various ways he could articulate this image, this idea of freedom of speech and what he remembers. over a series of images he came with the idea of essentially putting a blackboard in the background, a neutral background so that the speaker would stand tall amongst a group of people who are listening, holding the annual report of t
