what is expected from david hale? >> reporter: well, david hale was mentioned in a separate testimony that came out part of this week as concerns raised internally in the state department after the ouster of the then ukrainian ambassador marie yovanovitch. yovanovitch hofk had been targeted by rudy guiliani and his associates. yovanovitch raised concerns about the efforts to push the ukrainian's investigations that can help the president politically. according to testimony that came out from mike mckinley, a top state official, he had reached out to a number of other top state official, including david hale, testifying today and saying he wanted the state department to issue a strong statement of public support for yovanovitch, but hale is one person who did not respond. we are also hearing separately or according to a report in the associate press that hale will suggest that the secretary of state did not want to link -- was reluck that want to issue that show of support because he believed it could have hurt the rel

this afternoon, we're going to hear from david hale. he's the diplomat who overheard a conversation between president trump and sondland while sondland was in a ukrainian restaurant. hale told investigators that trump was speaking so loudly he could hear him ask sondland about the status of those political investigations. also this afternoon, defense department official laura cooper is expected to testify about the military aid that was frozen. democrats hope she can give insight into who was involved in the decision to freeze the aid and why. also in his testimony before the house intel committee, lieutenant colonel alexander vindman confirmed that the phone calls between the ukrainian president volodymyr zelensky was never to tackle corruption, take a look. >> colonel vindman, you indicated that you did include in your talking points the idea of ukraine rooting out corruption. but that president trump did not mention corruption. so, when the president says now that he held up security assistance because he was concerned about rooting

david hale is the first witness to show up. he is testifying that secretary of state mike pompeo did not defend a former ambassador because he was worried about what president trump's personal attorney rudy guiliani would think and he was worried that that could stooip stifle the efforts to get military aid to ukraine. >> in fallout from testimony released this week. a source says trump's former adviser fiona hill is furious at gordon sondland saying he tried to discredit her and lie in his sworn testimony. this is comeing a day after the release of sondland's testimony showed three pages of revisions he made. he won. sondland said he did remember that he was or had delivered a message about a quid pro quo to the ukrainian officials. let's get to capitol hill, senior congressional correspondent fanu raju on key testimony under way. so manu, hale tying politics again not to the military case it seems but to the firing of former u.s. ambassador to ukraine? >> reporter: yeah. and we'll see how much defense he ultimately gives to s
