during this time, this was western virginia. it was part of the state of area thatnd it was an was not greatly developed. a lot of the ideas of separation, becoming a separate state and things of that nature were not being put into this area. these are artifacts that belong to daniel boone when he settled in the area. he was in the valley for about 10 years from 1789 to 1799. this is the rifle daniel boone carried in the 1790's. this is his walking stick and beaver traps that he used to trap the river. he was also a surveyor. hes is a signed deed that surveyed land in the area and this is the way he marked a stone. daniel boone was very important at the time. he was one of the representatives of the newly formed county in the 1790's, and he was very involved in both politics and development. we are in the family cabin that was built in 1870. of whatin is a showcase type of a structure people lived in during that time. this cabin was used as the vice president's it was a school house, it has been a little bit of everything. ofhav

they are moving from west virginia into this region of southwest virginia. on may 6, crook and his men will skirmish at princeton. on may 8, they will skirmish at jeffersonville. they are coming up against troops under jenkins and mccausland. the union forces under crook have covered 45 miles on their campaign, and this brings us to the major battle in their movement. this is the battle of cloyd's mountain on may 9, 1864 in pulaski county, virginia. this will pitch a 6000 troops under crook against 2000 under albert jenkins. the battle lasts about one hour, but the union forces lost 10% of their available troops. also, at this battle, we have two future presidents in the ranks rutherford b, hays and mckinley. the results of the battle are generally ruled as a union victory since crook cavalry regiments will continue on and head towards their objectives on the virginia-tennessee railroad in dublin, virginia. the losses at this battle for the union are 688, confederate losses 538. these losses in this type of fighting is comparable to the battle of new market,
