they also worked all the way down in the caucasus and all the way deep into the ural mountains as well. it was way beyond the limits that we sometimes think of. now the size of the famine made it and a enormous challenge to try to deal with. but there were other challenges as well. one of them was the mere fact of the number of people that needed help. about 200k, you had american men working the famine in russia. obviously, they could only do so much. so they put together an army, literally, of russian employees, who worked under them. this network of russians who worked for the ara and eventually reached 125,000 people. and none of this work could have been done without the russians. so while it was american relief that was orchestrating it all, much of the work was done by the russians themselves. transportation, as you can imagine, over one million square miles was one of the biggest headaches. the railroad network had been destroyed as a result of the civil war. adjuvant was no longer simply working. the rail lines that were working were equally attacked by bandits and thieves. an
