different in iowa and new hampshire. bernie has been relatively consistent. then you have to look at mayor viablemerging as a very candidate coming out of basically nowhere. the mayor of south bend and now he is leading the polls in iowa and new hampshire. he has a real good chance to win both of those states. those are some things that surprised me the most. host: who do you think has the easiest path right now? >> if you look at the nomination i think it is biden. i think biden has demonstrated the ability to have the broadest older african-american voters, african-american working-class white voters, blue-collar white voters. i think if you look at his strength nationally he is still the front runner nationally. it may not be the case in iowa or new hampshire but i think that may not prevent him from winning the nomination. into south carolina and those super tuesday states where a significant number of african americans will vote, that favors biden. host: i want to come back to that. philip, from a republican perspective. of the skeptical democratic field

iowa and new hampshire. i love this state. growing up, i have great memories of visiting here as friends, climbing rattlesnake, getting up the highway toward some of your blue eyes you can ski on. high school in 1968, newter of hampshire was something else entirely. some of you remember that closely. age,ns of young people my an army of kids for peace carrying pamphlets while i was carrying a gun thousands of miles away. just kids knocking on doors. the peanut butter and jelly brigade, we called them. they prove themselves powerful enough to send a message all over the world that lyndon johnson could not be president anymore because of vietnam. it was an earthquake. it was palpable. it deserves to be applauded because you did it. [applause] it was a grassroots prairie fire and a great lesson for me and the power of the people. that is what we need. and my ownter presidential campaign new hampshire taught me another lesson or two. sometimes the best lesson are those learned the hard way at town hall meetings where the air crack

a senator from new hampshire. if we ran the presidential election the way jeanne shaheen has run her races in new hampshire, we will win. if we run like we're running in a deep blue state like massachusetts or california we , open up the risk that we could lose. that would be a tragedy. for us to turn around the judiciary and for us to put in place the progressive policies that we need to be able to address childhood poverty and be able to address climate change, it is going to require us to have a majority in the senate. my main point is, don't try to say one thing in the primary and another in the general election. you got to have the discipline to say the same thing in the primary and the same thing in the general election. if we do that, we will win. host: did gary hart give you any advice? sen. bennet: he did. he has mostly given me inspiration. he said look, i was at 1% in the polls once, too. he ended up going on to win the new hampshire primary because of a lot of people's help including jeanne shaheen. hi

and we are nine weeks away from new hampshire's primary. that is where one of 2020's democratic front-runners, former vice president joe biden, ended the week. cnn's arlette stynes is traveling with the biden campaign in hampton, new hampshire. >> reporter: dave and amara, fresh off of his eight-day bus tour in iowa, joe biden made a stop in new hampshire, where he was joined by his latest endorser, john kerry. kerry is a big get for biden's campaign. he's not just the former secretary of state but he also served next door to new hampshire as secretary of mma massachusetts. he won here in 2004, in the primary and the general election. and one thing that john kerry talked about overand over was joe biden's experience. saying he is the best positioned on foreign policy, on climate and also issues related to middle class. >> experience, wisdom, muscle memory, joe biden is a little bit like the new england patriots, i think -- fun to watch the promise and potential of young quarterbacks. but come february, i like having an experienced quarterba

candidate in new hampshire. he endorsed sanders in 2016, this time around said he was open to other candidates, looking and kicking tires of other campaigns, with that, came home to senator sanders. he wanted to you are support a candidate that's a movement candidate. his words. i was in the room, a lady asked about electability. she said trump is going to call you a socialist. how do you plan to handle that. he said trump will call any democrat a name. he plans to handle it by exciting voters, getting new voters in the fold. without naming joe biden by name, said you can't have another candidate where you have the same old same old. mentioned the bankruptcy bill and support for the iraq war, saying he is different than other democrats in the race. that's how senator sanders is trying to capitalize on momentum. you see him create distance with other candidates, and continuing to push the message and meet as many voters as he can. >> talk about black voters. new hampshire is basically home turf for sanders, not t

new hampshire 11 percent. west virginia the hardest hit 9 percent so at least we're turning in the right direction and i see many people are in their chair. so i you have been on the frontlines for a very long time and you have been day by day and step-by-step with setbacks wondering where is the money where is the help. why doesn't somebody raise more money and awareness and education information. i feel that we are chipping away to say slowly doesn't change overnight so we do feel there are little shades of hope that we should keep pushing forward but i would like to tell you something that is country incredibly divided especially this week a country that is divided there is no division whatsoever when it came time for congress last year to vote with little comprehensive peace of legislation hr six past with every single democratic vote. think about that people say would like to vote for this or the trade deal or the workforce development but i want to win. hr six is so overwhelmingly a win for people of thi

what have we heard from the former vice president as he's made his way through new hampshire? >> reporter: welcome inside what is one of my favorite venues in all of new hampshire, the historic exeter town hall. it is a venue that is intimate. i'm using my golf channel voice for fear of running afoul of the candidate and the audience behind me. biden just took the stage here in the last two minutes and he's doing what he often does at new hampshire events, which is talking about how similar it is to campaign in new hampshire and his home state of delaware, small states where individual contacts with voters matter so much. he's al he's also been sending a message of unity. this message of working with republicans across the aisle, his belief that he can still do that despite what some of his democratic rivals are saying are something he's really hitting hard in this state. he's been asked the last few days about whether he would comply with a subpoena, whether he would testify in a senate impeachment trial. he did an interview with the herald just before he came here to exeter.

"he's the one who wasn't on the stage"? come on! >> alcindor: well, you're here now with us. >> i'll get there. >> alcindor: you gotn this race just last month. what do you see is your path to the nomination, given that some people think that maybe you entered too late? >> well, it's... i'm later but not late. and i... i thank you for the chance to make that point because, until the voters vote. and what's quite clear even if you do trust the polling that's out there is that thnde are other ates who have been in for a long time, spent a lot of money and a lot of me, and it's still a wide open race. large, large proportions, majorities of undecided voters in all of the early states. so, we are respectful of the calendar. we will compete in all of the early states. we're spenng a lot of time in new hampshire and southca lina, in particular, because primaries are just.

when i'm in new hampshire, one of the early states, i think about somebody like the senator from new hampshire. if we ran the presidential election the way she ran her race in new hampshire, we will win. if we run like we're running in state, wee space -- open up the risk that we could lose. that would be a tragedy. for us to turn around the placeary and to put in the progressive policies that we need to be able to address childhood poverty and climate change, it will require us to have a majority in the senate. don't want to say one thing in the primary and another in the general election. you have to have the discipline to say the same thing in the primary and general election. if we do that, we will win. >> did gary hart give you any advice? >> he did. he mostly gave me an -- inspiration. i was 1% in the polls once, too. he ended up going on to win the new hampshire primary because of a lot of people's help. his advice mostly was to get in the race. he's a big believer that it's important to be involved. understands that much of this process is putting one foot in front of the oth
