michael bloomberg and tom steyer. in fact, the two billionaire candidates are dwarfing the entire presidential field when it comes to ad spending. across tv and radio in 2019, bloomberg and steyer amount to more than half the total spending by all democratic presidential candidates. and they spent this money, largely, from their own fortunes and much less time on the trail than most of their rivals. steyer joined the race in july. bloomberg has only been in the race for about a month. ad spending, of course, does not directly correlate to support in the polls. but it does get your name in the ears of the electorate. joining me now is one of those presidential candidates, tom steyer. good to see you. how are you? >> great, chris. how are you? >> i'm well. so when you got into this race, a couple things people talked about a lot. two strengths. one was your commitment to climate change. the other was the money you have. obviously, now, you've got somebody else in the race who has both of those things and, in fact, is no

steyer spent just over $80 million of their own money by one report. closest candidate to those two, pete buttigieg spent $19 million. what do you make of all the money being spent? specific to these two candidates and what they're trying to do or is it where the political landscape is headed for the cycles to come? >> i would say most candidates don't have pockets quite as deep as these millionaires. right? why they're called billionaires. a lot of money to throw around. absolutely unprecedented. whether anybody else could come close to emulating those ad blitzes is quite unlike loy. i'm not sure the overall messaging that is coming off of these vast sums of money is particularly helpful. particularly in a primary in which there doesn't seem to be a lot of clamoring from the base for, you know, deep pocketed billionaires on the ticket. what these candidates are trying to do, of course, is to just saturate the airwaves, buy a lot of support, and maybe that will get them more name recognition at the very least. the optics of it, these huge amounts of mo

today democratic presidential candidate tom steyer was also in the bay area. the billionaire and san francisco resident was in walnut creek. he spoke an answer to questions and town hall spoken by the democrats group. he made most of his wealth by creating and running a hedge fund. his business accuman will help him win against president trump. >> he played a businessman on a reality tv show. if you look at his business, he's doing exactly as president what he did in his business, which is leverage up as much, get as much debt as you can, promise whatever you have to promise, there really is no truth in this world about promising. never think about paying it back, never intend to pay it back, and after everything falls apart, walk away. >> tomorrow steyer will be talking part in a town hall in napa. a cnn poll shows they are not polling above 5% against voters in california. poll voters are evenly split among joe biden, bernie sanders and lielizabeth warren. no other candidate reaches the double digits. california is one of the most delegate rich states among

so is tom steyer. pete buttigieg is criticized for comments he made in 2011 about kids in lower income minority neighborhoods. as he struggles to attract support from black voters, he goes to church this morning before morning worship, the reverend william barber will join me. ned price, a special assistant to president obama. now he is an msnbc analyst. christina greer, beth couey and kyle cheney, congressional reporter for politico. kyle will be up for the next round of impeachment hearings, the first scheduled for wednesday. underpinning that is a report by the house intelligence committee. its members will see a draft tomorrow. it will be put up for a vote tuesday. we're paying attention to a couple of deadlines put in place by jerry nadler. president trump and his attorneys have to decide whether or not they want to part in the proceedings. one deadline is today for that wednesday hearing. another one is friday. president trump, as i said, will not be in washington while all of this is unfolding.

his name is max steyer. the letter is cc'ed to chuck grassley the chairman of the judiciary committee and dianne feinstein the ranking member. max steyer is not interviewed. then senator coons desperate to get attention to this starts to reach out to his colleagues. he calls and this is all in the course of days as the clock is ticking and the fbi is producing and delivering its report. he reaches out to senator flake and he says there is this guy you need to talk to and he says i'm dealing with death threats against my family but i can't deal with it. i can't talk to him. he tries to reach out and sends an e-mail to senator collins. he doesn't hear back from her. why not? it turns out that senator collins e-mail has been widely disseminated in the middle of this whole mess so she changes her e-mail and senator coons, she sent a note to her colleagues. senator coons sends the e-mail to senator collins previous e-mail. it was not until i called senator collins office a year later that i found this e-mail from

. >>> still to come, 2020 candidates tom steyer and mike ma bloomberg are bloflooding the airwaves with ads. $2 million in digital and tv ads with bloomberg shelling out $110 million since he joined the race nearly three weeks ago. cnn's abby phillip joins me to talk about this. abby, it seems every day we're getting emails about the volumes of money that both of these men are spending. how has it impacted the race at this point? >> hey, ryan, it's really unprecedented what we're seeing in terms of the money and what the impact is i think a little bit of it remains to be seen but clearly this is somewhat they have to contend with because when you have both candidates, both independently wealthy men, spending 2 million. what you're seeing spent in a cycle of two weeks it changes the dynamics. it forces the candidates to start thinking about what happens after the first four early states, on the early tuesday states, where, for example, bloomberg is expending a lot of his money. and even in states like south carolina where tom steyer is spending a ton of money, he has a big campaign organ

become as easily as annoyed by the bloomberg and steyer commercials. this isn't really helping them in the polls. and i will remind you all that jeb bush raised $100 million and he might as well have lit that on fire for all it got him. >> well, tom starr got into the debate debate. he's focusing all his advertising into the super-tuesday states where no other democrat right now, with the exception of one or two are spending resources. so that's his -- that's what he sees his pathway to forget about the four early states and then focus on super-tuesday. >> money is always helpful in political campaigns. but in the end, it's not the determining factor. and there is such a thing as you can overspend. i mean, you can saturate a market. you have to -- you have to hit it at the right message at the right time in the right amount. and both of these billionaires, i just don't see -- i've studied them both. they just don't have voter appeal. >> so forget about what it means for the two of them. what does it mean for the field and for the race overall to just h
