the bernie sanders haul, absolutely amazing. he could influence the direction of the party, the party's platform and the eventual nominee. >> if he doesn't win in these early states, he can stay as long as he wants, assuming he doesn't burn the cash on hand numbers which is often more significant than the total haul because it shows how much money is left for these campaigners to campaign on. julian castro dropping out. not a huge surprise because he was struggling in the polls, not making the debate stage. he did have an impact on some of the rhetoric in this race, particularly on immigration. he pushed the more liberal immigration policy, he wanted to decriminalize border crossings. that's things that his campaign agreed with him on. he said this in the debate earlier this year. >> let's be very clear. the reason they're separating these little children from their families is they're using section 1325 of that act which criminalizes coming across the border to incarcerate the parents and then separate them. some of us on this

>> first, i want to point out that bernie sanders is leading with nonwhite voters. in particular -- >> where? >> in national polls. he has the least white support in terms of overall estimation of who's supporting him compared to anyoire -- >> why is he having problems with black voters? >> he is not having problems with black voters. he consistently polls either number two or three with black voters. what's so interesting is that when you look over the course of the campaign -- and i know we're talking about some of the candidates of color who have recently dropped out. persistently bernie sanders has polled better with black voters than all those people of color. so the question becomes what are people of color looking for? what are black women specifically looking for? in an essence poll, what we said the number one issue was was health care. when you look at other polls that show who is trusted most on issues, including health care, it is bernie sanders. so i think the winning ticket here, it's not about what bernie sanders represents per se. when you ask people

we've failed to mention bernie sanders often enough. this is a four-way race in those early states. >> look, you have nearly $25 million raised, david, in the last quarter in q4 by pete buttigieg. sdwh what does it tell you about america right now in this moment that a 37-year-old mayor of a small town who is openly gay can raise that kind of money consistently quarter by quarter? >> well, i think it's a couple of things. he's been a good candidate. he's a fresh face. i think there's such a kind of open pallet for politicians to paint on. and one of the reasons bernie sanders has moved forward is he wasn't getting the scrutiny that elizabeth warren has been getting. there's a lot of fear among democrats that she will cause the party to lose to donald trump. you have a lot of running room here. a progressive wing of the party that i think is certainly resurgent but scares a lot of democrats focused on beating president trump. you have somebody in buttigieg who occupies -- i've always thought he occupies this lane on his own, right? he's

that seems to be what bernie sanders is doing. >> yeah, anyone that has followed bernie sanders knows that the guy steps out on the campaign battlefield wearing a pair of brass knuckles. he's a tough fighter. you have two polls. one shows bernie up by a couple and biden up a couple points with warren and buttigieg close behind. there is a close haul. a four-way race in iowa. you can argue that bernie and biden are sort of tier 1 a. mayor pete and warren are 1 b. but anything can happen. one of the untold stories of this campaign so far has been the absolutely remarkable staying power of bernie sanders and joe biden. both taking a lot of incoming. bernie sanders has had the healthcare. joe biden has had the toughest press of anyone and still right there at the top. >> dana: matt, as if bernie and biden are the two polar opposites of the democratic party right now. former obama adviser jim messina said president trump would love to take on best because he would be easier to beat. what do you make of that? >> jim has not endorsed the candidates but his wife is a supporter of joe biden. i

showing bernie sanders surge. joe biden doing pretty darn well in everything but the des moines register poll and elizabeth warren going down. is that the feel, the state of play on the ground in iowa? >> yeah. i think, joe, if you look at these numbers, you know, you look at -- one said the des moines register poll and monmouth poll of iowa basic lip the same. both have the top for candidates all within margin of errors. essentially a four-way tie in the polls. the thing you and i corresponded about yesterday, look at the trends over the last month or two and there's sadly not been that much polling from iowa. what we've seen there and in some other states is you do see bernie sanders and joe biden, kind of, slowly -- not dramatically but gradually getting altitude and elizabeth warren and pete buttigieg some of the air coming out of, wind coming out of the sails from those two candidates. that's how it feels on the ground in iowa a little bit. i saw elizabeth warren over the weekend. she had a packed house full

this is the first time i believe senator bernie sanders has actually topped the iowa poll. what do you make of it coming so close to the actual caucus day? >> well, if you're working for bernie sanders, you have to be a happy campaign volunteer at this point. every other top tier candidate, joe biden, elizabeth warren and pete buttigieg have all sat atop this poll at one point or the other. senator vermont to now be in the lead, six weeks out from the iowa caucus i think is a big sign for his campaign. if you dive into the numbers a little bit further, you can see that t that he also has a lot of enthusiasm behind him. that's important in the iowa caucuses, bernie sanders supporters are with him, they are ready to support him, eager to caucus with him for the iowa caucuses, whereas other candidates, supporters, have second choices, back up candidates they might have an eye toward if their candidate doesn't do well in the first round in the precinct. 45% of respondents in this des moines, iowa, poll, indicated that they still are unsure whether or not they're firmly behind t
