theyn the gop are realistically thinking they could sway in this impeachment trial? senators who are running for reelection in states int hillary clinton carried 2016, senator cory gardner and senator susan collins. it will be media event, but we have been watching these senators for the entire cycle. they have been vulnerable for the entire cycle. i am not sure how persuadable they are. i would suspect that gardner and collins would vote along with the rest of the republican party and support the president before acquitting because i think they have seen how some of their colleagues, when they have backed away from the president, have been hurt. set lender -- senator kelly ayotte of new hampshire -- they saw that when you back away from the president, you risk losing republican voters. i am trying to imagine, if senders gardner or collins or any of them vote to remove the republican president of the united states, republican voters will -- enough republican voters will move away from them in the reelection, where it will be impossible for them to win. it is not easy

how did it impact those in the senate especially the gop senators who might be in play? let's go to phil mattingly on capitol hill. what are you hearing? >> at the end of alan dershowitz's presentation more than a dozen senators walked up to shake his hand including senator mcconnell say wonderful to dershowitz. the senate gop conference right now is in a different place than they were this morning. i'm told they were very unsettled by the bolton revelations "the new york times" broke last night. senator mcconnell had not been looped in on the manuscript before it was put out by "the new york times." a rather terse statement i think was pointed for a reason and here's why. i'm told behind the scenes several republican senators made calls to the white house out of frustration saying, look, we need to know ability these things and we feel like we were left out of the loop. several republican members voiced their concerns about where things were headed. they were so unsettled in fact one republican senator pat toomey raised an opinion pinging around the republican conferenc

something could happen that could sway gop senators? something you might expect? >> no, there's absolutely nothing, i believe, that can be said at this point in time that will sway gop senators to remove the president from office. the case that was presented by the democrats over 20-odd hours over the last week was one of the best that i have ever seen presented by any lawyer or non-lawyer over the last 30 years. the closing statements made by the managers, all of the evidence, all of the testimony that we heard, was absolutely dead on. and at that point in time, if the best that the president's defense team could come up with was what we saw in yesterday's two-hour preview was nothing that can change their minds. what we seem to see from senator mitchell as well as his republican colleagues is that winning and keeping this president in office is more important than the constitution. it is more important than the nation. it is more important than any of the things that we teach other pro-democracy nations about the importance of democracy and the importance of mor
