as for the investigation, the ntsb has wrapped up on-site work. we were there when they removed parts of the helicopter and other evidence from the crash site. from there, a truck hauled pieces away for a bigger part of the investigation. >> what evidence do we look at to help make the determination of whether he should have been flying in this kind of weather, we are going to look at the weather conditions and we will talk with air traffic control. we will speak with the company and we will look at records. >> we are also learning for the final 12 seconds of the crash, the helicopter descended rapidly hitting a rate of nearly 2000 feet per minute. another concern, the helicopter was not a clipped with an alarm system that could've warned the pilot he was approaching the hillside. he missed it by 20-30 feet. something the ntsb says should have been required by the faa. >>> that is chris holmstrom reporting tonight. they are urging the nba to redesign the logo to future kobe bryant. >>> the president's impeachment trial will not be a quick win. >>>

today, a helicopter began lifting the heavy wreckage of the downed chopper off a rugged hillside as ntsb teams use a drone to examine the charred and twisted remains. the pilot, 49-year-old ara zobayan, kobe bryant's favorite pilot was certified for both visual and instrument flight rules. in a statement, the helicopter charter company says ara has been with the company for over ten years and has over 8,000 flight hours. >> he was pretty experienced and had flown these flights before under vfr but we are collecting additional information about the pilot to see how the pilot was trained. >> reporter: this video appears to show the chopper minutes before the crash as it circled, awaiting air traffic clearance to fly north toward kobe bryant's training academy. as thick clouds and fog moved in sunday morning, trouble came fast flight data indicates the chopper dropped 350 feet in six seconds, banking a hard left turn and accelerating, slamming into the hillside at 176 miles per hour the question for invebestigme disoriented in the clouds a former marine instructor pilot says it can happen i

county sheriffs department, we are working with our federal partners, ntsb and ncaa to assist, the faa is already on scene. they have provided valuable assistance, they've secured a 5 mile flight restriction for the area of the crash site and also 5,000-foot ceiling over it. so that is a great help in securing the crash site. as you may already heard from the ntsb, they're already en route to our location to initiate the investigation. we want to thank our partners, the l.a. county fire department for their timely response putting out the fire and securing the area. and right now, it's, as you can imagine, it's a logistical nightmare in a sense, because the crash site, itself, is not easily accessible. however, we are now faced with well wishers and people mourning, who have descended on the area on the residential community and even the crash site, itself. we have to reiterate, it is off limits to everybody, except the first responders and investigators. so, we now have personnel deployed to get people away from there and they cannot access the crash sight. it is in very rough terrain

what -- what can the ntsb do about that? >> well, the ntsb has no authority over there. the iranian will investigate the accident. they will be the lead. they invite the ntsb and others in as technical assistants, you know, under the treaty or under annex 13 of iko's, the international civil aviation organization, but the fact of the matter is that we've seen this in the past. we've had accident sites where wreckage has been pilfered, bodies have been pilfered, and in this particular instance there was no security. i saw one report where there was a reporter standing in the middle of the debris field. that would never happen here in the united states or elsewhere, so that's a real issue, especially if you're trying to have a transparent investigation, and now all the wreckage has disappeared, how are you going to do that? >> well, what about the black boxes? because iran says their time frame is that it will take two months to extract data from the black boxes. does that sound right to you? >> well, it does, but, again, you have to take that with some, you know, caution.

>> reporter: wolf, we know the faa is already on scene and the ntsb on the way. i don't think we will get any official answers for quite some time. what we know from speaking to people in this area, when the crash occurred this morning, this was a very foggy morning. visibility would have been ploep i spoke to a pilot friend of mine who said he decided not to fly because of the visibility. i spoke to people on the other side of the valley about the crash and said they heard a loud impact, indicating it was not a controlled landing gone wrong but something else. we have no official indication. what we are seeing over at the crash scene there, there is still a little bit of smoke. this crash ignited a brush fire on that hill site. in the past 20 minutes or so we have seen flashbulbs of cameras taking pictures. first responders had to deal with the fire while also trying to preserve this scene. here in los angeles the how and why are very secondary at the moment. kobe by ant is dead at 41 years old. that is what people care about here. i'm surrounded by hundreds of
