it was such joy and elation in chapel hill, not just in chapel hill. once the word got out that i was on the verge of winning, people started to come here from durham and some from raleigh, some from greensboro, because several of the colleges in greensboro sent students down to campaign in the campaign and i was not here when unc won its first ncaa championship, but i was told that the crowds in the street were absolutely amazing. that was what happened the night of my election. and the reaction was mixed. there were some people who -- some newspapers printed stories, chapel hill elects a black power mayor. some wrote a radical elected mayor of chapel hill. there were those responses, but others that recognized the historical aspects of what had just occurred. i did not know until that night that there had never been a black mayor of a majority white municipality. we don't think ever, but certainly since reconstruction. that started to make headlines. even the more pleasant part is that even my hometown paper had a positive story. the atlanta journal

in the 1960's chapel hill was segregated. people could not go into stores, the schools were segregated. the movie theaters, all things were segregated. this was a time when, again, black people had to create their own community. in this particular community they built their home, they had a business district. they had one school. they had their churches that everyone attended. there was a very close-knit community. what got the ball rolling here in chapel hill during the civil rights movement was, after the greensboro sit in, there were a group of guys that got together and they decided they needed to do something here in chapel hill to make change happen. that is where the chapel hill nine started. what made this group different from those that were going on in other places was that this was led by high school students. students got together, talked about it, and they begin planning for citizens and sit in's and marches. they were subjected to name-calling. they were subjected to rock throwing. they were subjected to chemica

how quickly can the heat become a danger even in these welsh hills? professor george havenith is an expert on how the climate affects the human body. we are monitoring the core temperature inside and here on the outside we can monitor the heart rate. he gave evidence at the inquest of those who died in the heat in the brecon beacons. we have not made it that hard, just 22 degrees celsius to simulate what is happening in the field and to show that it doesn't have to be extremely hot to get problems with heat illness. the volunteer alex was an athlete in a university rowing team. he has 20 kilos on his back and has been marching for an hour uphill. with lamps to replicate the sun, high humidity and no wind, his core body temperature heads towards 39 degrees. in the lab we would let him go on for another 20 minutes before we would have to take him out for safety regulations. and in the field you'd say if you just let him go on, i think within the next 45 minutes, he could develop health issues. out in the field, military instructors rely on mod guidance
