it was such joy and elation in chapel hill, not just in chapel hill. once the word got out that i was on the verge of winning, people started to come here from durham and some from raleigh, some from greensboro, because several of the colleges in greensboro sent students down to campaign in the campaign and i was not here when unc won its first ncaa championship, but i was told that the crowds in the street were absolutely amazing. that was what happened the night of my election. and the reaction was mixed. there were some people who -- some newspapers printed stories, chapel hill elects a black power mayor. some wrote a radical elected mayor of chapel hill. there were those responses, but others that recognized the historical aspects of what had just occurred. i did not know until that night that there had never been a black mayor of a majority white municipality. we don't think ever, but certainly since reconstruction. that started to make headlines. even the more pleasant part is that even my hometown paper had a positive story. the atlanta journal

in the 1960's chapel hill was segregated. people could not go into stores, the schools were segregated. the movie theaters, all things were segregated. this was a time when, again, black people had to create their own community. in this particular community they built their home, they had a business district. they had one school. they had their churches that everyone attended. there was a very close-knit community. what got the ball rolling here in chapel hill during the civil rights movement was, after the greensboro sit in, there were a group of guys that got together and they decided they needed to do something here in chapel hill to make change happen. that is where the chapel hill nine started. what made this group different from those that were going on in other places was that this was led by high school students. students got together, talked about it, and they begin planning for citizens and sit in's and marches. they were subjected to name-calling. they were subjected to rock throwing. they were subjected to chemica

on the top of one of the hill it is a farm house, look out on the fields below. it resembles on elderly woman leaning i into itself, i folding around an every weakening structure. gray now. it is wooden boards warm and faded. but there are hints the white and green it once wore. there's a strength in its brokenness and it has withstood weather, time, and families. it is vacant now. resting, watching, waiting, as each new day cascades into cow creek. this holler feels like home and this house feels like family. there are women stories here, stovers resilience, love and strength. this community knows them well. but their echo has not reached far enough some the outside world. instead these tales he ricocheted went the mountains, growing more faint with time. i want to tell these stories bus they matter. because i'm afraid they will be forgotten. because they have the power to make this community visible. and as i stop my vehicle and walk toward the house, the memories wash over me like the sunlight on the mountain hills. and so this introduction i thing says a lot

rain turns to snow across the hills of northern england and scotland, and it could get down to lower levels for a time, and that could coincide with the monday morning rush hour in scotland, so some atrocious conditions here and a risk of some disruption. this band of heavy rain pushes its way south and east across england and wales. it could bring another a0 to 50 millimetres across the hills of wales for a time, and that water will be running into the river catchments, providing further flooding problems. as the rain clears, it's blustery with showers following. for tuesday and wednesday, high pressure to the south—west, maintaining north—westerly winds, and on tuesday they will be bringing us a mixture of sunshine and showers. many eastern areas starting dry and sunny, showers will swing in through the day, getting increasingly widespread as a trough starts to push in. showers could turn thundery and will still have a wintry flavour. for wednesday, the showers continue to be brought in on cold north—westerly winds, particularly frequent in north—western areas, the cheshire

how quickly can the heat become a danger even in these welsh hills? professor george havenith is an expert on how the climate affects the human body. we are monitoring the core temperature inside and here on the outside we can monitor the heart rate. he gave evidence at the inquest of those who died in the heat in the brecon beacons. we have not made it that hard, just 22 degrees celsius to simulate what is happening in the field and to show that it doesn't have to be extremely hot to get problems with heat illness. the volunteer alex was an athlete in a university rowing team. he has 20 kilos on his back and has been marching for an hour uphill. with lamps to replicate the sun, high humidity and no wind, his core body temperature heads towards 39 degrees. in the lab we would let him go on for another 20 minutes before we would have to take him out for safety regulations. and in the field you'd say if you just let him go on, i think within the next 45 minutes, he could develop health issues. out in the field, military instructors rely on mod guidance

still windy in the hills becoming down throughout the day. it will be warm for us and we could use some rain. they are getting some in southern california with that system out of baja, four corners and deep south. these are big-time systems. somebody's getting rain because we are not obviously. southern california is with east pasadena and inch and a half of rain with snow in the mountains. san diego had two thirds of an inch and even burbank had a half inch of rain. we also have snow in flagstaff. it is active to the north and south, but not here. it is one of the years words not eire turn, at least not yet. sunny and breezy with mild skies, upper 60s to low 70s. the wind gusts brighton center yesterday locally with 43 up to 87 miles getting gusts to about 50. the wind advisory until 11:00 but mostly in the higher areas now. if you're at delta watch out for that. mount diablo does have 50 miles an hour wind. the 20s to 50s with the city at 54. santa rosa at 39, walnut creek at 36, fairfield and brentwood 51. so that wind is making a differen

temperatures falling here so they'll be wintry on the hills. but it will be milder across the south. that weather front pushes its way southwards and eastwards into saturday, bringing an unwelcome band of rain there, but further north, it stays very windy indeed. a real squeeze in the isobars there and there will be lots of showers. these piling into much of scotland, some heavy with hail, thunder, and also settling snow on the hills and maybe some blizzard conditions as well with the strength of the winds. further south, rather cloudy, outbreaks of rain, mainly towards the west but it will be another mild day in the south — 11—14 degrees, but colder further north. and then as we move through saturday night, this next feature runs into england and wales which could bring a spell of unwelcome rain once again. further north, it will be quite windy with further showers but at least the good news is, through sunday, that rain should clear away quite quickly and then skies brighten up quite nicely, with plenty of sunshine around, so a welcome da

usually or oftentimes the wind advisories are for the hills or north bay or for the hills of the east bay. this was right down to sea level. look at livermore at 53 miles per hour today. san francisco, downtown, 51 miles per hour. mount diablo, up high, 75. and middletown up there in lake county, they got up to 80 miles per hour. the winds right now are still blowing but they've really backed off in the last two hours or so and as we go into tomorrow morning, you see how the colors soften a little bit. the numbers are there. the colors, the blues, the yellows. much less wind tomorrow. the wind advisory stays in effect is at 43. middle peak at 35 miles per hour. really it has come down a bit. i think the worst is over here. and we'll talk a little more about the event up in lake tahoe area. near alpine meadows. unofficial for the reno weather service. over 200 miles per hour. that would set the all-time record for wind gusts in the state of california. still not confirmed but that's some significant wind. >>> the strong winds knocked out power to tens of thousands of customers today ar
