kennedy: how much? dr. waller: i don't know. sen. kennedy: what's your gut tell you? i'm going to land this plane. dr. waller: i will throw it a number, $500 million. sen. kennedy: thank you. sen. crapo: senator cortez masto. sen. cortez masto: i appreciate the line of questioning. dr. shelton, let me ask you this , in july of 2015, you presented at the cato university an op ed in response to a question you you said, i don't trust government statistics on g.d.p. growth or on inflation. what specifically about those statistics do you distrust? dr. shelton: i think it is a challenge to look at him up particularly with regard to inflation, the variety of indexes. we are familiar with the consumer price index. the fed uses the personal consumption expenditures index. i'm not sure that either captures the impact of technological innovation. that is, a basket of goods priced at a certain level that might deliver more in terms of services than say a telephone from 20 years ago. so, i'm not saying i distrust. i'm just saying it's difficult to measure consistently through time

that perked kennedy up. he said i think every politician should write a book, it can help your standing in the political realm. that is what nixon did. he worked on a book. it cover different moments, different crises. it is similar in structure to george bush's. it really picks key moments from that person's life. it was a best-selling book. it helped him begin to reestablish himself as a politician and begin that second act that led him to become president. >> after watergate, he authored several more books. how does this change his reputation post watergate? craig: his presidential memoirs which cannot directly after watergate, were hugely anticipated. it was breaking news when the page count came out. people were like, this is how long the book is going to be. there was intense issue because the watergate issue. after that, the books became less newsy, they were more philosophical, books about governing philosophy and politics. i think they helped, as much as anything else, president nixon settle into th

bobby kennedy and jack kennedy knew it. jack kennedy is giving his state of the union address and president kennedy is all, we are fighting for democracy and freedom and there is an opportunity for what is happening here on the globe because we have all of these people. it was the middle of decolonization. africans, asians arabs, latinos, , those nations are getting free. imperial bonds are loosening and he sees this as an incredible moment for freedom in the global south. but he didn't mention the american south. in this freedom struggle. a kind of silence there. but he needed that silence, because what he was dealing with, he had just come back from the vienna summit. remember the one, his brother was trying to get the freedom riders to be quiet on? that didn't go so well. he met with khrushchev. khrushchev took him to school. i mean ooh. this wasn't pretty. it really wasn't pretty and it was kennedy's fault. he acknowledged that later on. he thought what he could do, because he has his own charm, he can walk in and charm

thank you for being here at the kennedy school. i'm david, director of the malcolm weiner center for social policy. my question is by the nature her to bond between senators mccain and kennedy. when i think about their relationship which was evident, everybody who saw it, one thing i think about i don't see as much today in public life is a sense of common purpose, a sense that even if we may disagree on a specific issue, we're both united behind the idea of country over party and sometimes country over personal gain, and so my question is, how do we foster that in our young people here the kennedy school are harvard more generally. it's essential to the government. >> country over party? >> country over party. country over state, country over everything else. i mean, i was reading john mccain's oral history, i was mentioning to cindy just re-read it and i encourage everyone to read it. did an oral hit for the edward m. kennedy oral history project and it's online and you can read it. he said something that was so interesting to me

much on the glow of the kennedy presidency and wanting to see many of kennedy's ideas put forth into action. but then, as happens with many presidents, the vietnam war leads to his dÉnouement. susan: how important is it, that themselves had built their own media empire? patty: very important. in texas, lady bird johnson purchased a radio station, than they had newspapers, so that really helped him on his rise in texas. we have seen lbj corralling legislatures with the finger-pointing and that very intimidating style, and that was very much his style with the press. he felt like you were either for him or against him. he was not below calling your boss if your boss was president of the network, if the story you had done if it did not please him. so he is trying to work both sides of it, trying to be friends with reporters as well as the powerful moguls who run the various broadcasting companies and newspapers at the time, but you can see where that doesn't play very well if you are a reporter on the beat, that he will call out on cbs if you do a story that displeases him. which he di
