is not atlanta. this is not a protest. this is not in the spirit of martin luther king jr. this is chaos. >> reporter: georgia's governor tweeted he activated as many as 500 national guard troops to protect people and property in atlanta and issued a state of emergency for fulton county. in addition to the protests seen in downtown atlanta protesters also made their way north of the city to lenox square mall located in the buckhead community. there were reports of looting inside the mall. the atlanta fire department has been responding to multiple fires across the city overnight. a curfew was imposed in minneapolis but protesters were still in the streets after tear gas and flash bangs were fired at crowd. at one point protesters peacefully knelt in front of police in the city as a curfew went into effect in minneapolis and st. paul. 350 troopers cleared minneapolis' 5th precinct after officials said shots were fired at officers but no officers were injured. dozens of protesters were arrested friday

streets of atlanta is not atlanta. this is is not a protest. this is not in the spirit of martin luther king jr. this is chaos. >> reporter: georgia's governor brian kemp tweet head activated as many as 500 national guard troops. in addition to the protests seen in downtown atlanta, protesters also made their way to north of the city to lenox square mall. there are reports of looting inside the mall. the atlanta fire department has been responding to multiple fires across the city overnight. a curfew was imposed in minneapolis, but protesters were still in the streets after tear gas and flash bangs were fired at crowds. at one point, protesters peacefully knelt in front of police in the city as a curfew meant in effect in minneapolis and st. paul. groups were cleared after shots were fired at officers but no officers were injured. dozens of protesters were arrested friday in new york city, after a standoff between police and protesters outside of the barclay center in brooklyn. some were injured but none of those injur

jonathan serrie is live in atlanta, georgia. jonathan? >> hi, jon. the mayor is determined to avoid what happened last night from happening again today, just seconds ago, or minutes ago, she signed an executive order declaring a 9:00 curfew tonight that will remain in effect until sunrise tomorrow. this is what she's trying to avoid: all of this damage here. we're just outside cnn center. you can see the boarded-up windows around the perimeter of cnn center. we see some stragglers, a few protesters gathered around here. there was a larger crowd right of this corner of centennial olympic park drive and marietta boulevard a little while ago. a few bottles were hurled at police officers, and then the protesters started walking the perimeter of centennial olympic park, but as you can see here, the park itself is closed. they decided to close it to prevent the protesters from going in. today daylight revealed for the first time the full extent of the damage from last night's rioting. protesters vandalized the college football hall of fame, the omni hotel.

in atlanta meanwhile 2 police officers have been fired for using excessive force on protesters the city's police chief said members of her force can't be allowed to act with impunity i think is law enforcement if we are ever going to get out of this space that we are in today we have to recognize that our behaviors cannot consistently be pardoned because we are law enforcement. these these are good guys i know them as individuals i've worked with the one for over 20 years. but they made that level of mistake that cannot be rolled back. well let's go south now and talk to andy gallagher who joins us live from miami andy so what's the latest regarding the arrest of 5 policemen in atlanta over police brutality video from last night. you know i don't know if we've got the video to show our viewers but it's pretty horrific from the point of view of the person that recorded it there were 2 what appeared to be young women in a car when the atlanta police descended on that car one of them slashing a tire with a big knife and then tasing at least one of the people inside that car and dragging them

standing in downtown atlanta, by the iconic cnn center. that's where the red cnn sign is and where it was defaced. see a big difference tonight for two reasons, one, resources. more national guard officials are here. you can see some of the vehicles and atlanta police officers still going through and working to clear the streets. other thing is that stricter rules were put into place tonight. we have a 9:00 p.m. curfew in effect for atlanta and we no really about ten minutes or so before 9:00, saw the armored vehicles announcing, saying you've got ten minutes, you're going to be arrested if you don't disperse. after that we saw tear gas go into the cloud, and clash between protesters and police. but it was so much more contained than this time last night. do need to say right now one atlanta police officer is in the hospital being treated because of a very -- almost a skirmish that we saw earlier tonight. police had mostly cleared the streets but there was a rider on atv who ran into an officer at high rate of speed. told that officer sust

our leaders in our own cities right here in atlanta. our mayor here in atlanta has done an incredible job, telling people to go home. she spoke with that authority as a mayor and a mother. however, all of us can calm this storm, burning and looting is not good. it does lead to more violence. violence begets violence. so i believe when martin luther king, jr. said injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, certainly this horrendous kill something terrible. however, we can lead from our own hearts and our own communities and say to each other, this is bad, but we must stop the violence. jedediah: you know, al vide today, your uncle also talked about how riots were destructive, self-defeating. was such an advocate for peaceful protest to bring about effective change. what do you say though to protesters who are out there, saying you know what, if i don't do something like this, if i don't act out violently i will not be heard, i will not effectuate change?

atlanta remains under a state of emergency this morning. a very different story from what we saw saturday night versus what we saw on friday night, the first night of protest. right over here really tells the story. this barrier has been put up around many of the places here in downtown around the cnn center, restaurants, hotels, to keep people from getting to these buildings. if you look beyond, you can see exactly why. you see the shattered glass, shattered windows, doors broken in, all sorts of signs from what we saw on friday night. last night a much different story. apd made about 70 arrests overnight. it comes after atlanta mayor enforced a 9:00 p.m. curfew. everybody had to be off the streets of atlanta by 9:00. we were out here. we saw not only atlanta police officers but national guard troops moving people, keeping them contained and making those arrests. now, this morning as officers prepare for another night of protests, there is one atlanta police officer who is recovering this morning after being hit by an atv as officers began

multiple governors enacted the national guard and curve baan y including atlanta, louisville, atlanta and milwaukee. some of those are ignored. state officials warn could see more violence and destruction than anything the city has seen so far. in washington, d.c., the scene is described as riot territory as people smash windows and burn at least one car more than 100 p them have been arrested during the protests, the mayor held a protest short time ago with a message saying it's time to go home. initially a peaceful protest turned vial with some demonstrating turning police cars an in chicago demonstrators swarming the trump tower. mayor lori lightfoot with this to say. >> i want to express my disappointment and really my total disgust at the number of others who came to today's protest armed for all-out battle. you don't come to a peaceful protest with a bowling ball or a hammer or a shovel or a baseball bat. you don't come to a peaceful protest with bottles of urine to throw at police officers. i applaud the vast majority of individuals who came here to make true and lasting change

we are joined by the atlanta mayor. thank you for joining us. as georgia reopens, you have remained steadfast that atlanta is not ready to ease restrictions. what is your argument for continuing to urge your residents to continue to stay at home? >> thank you for having me, wolf. my argument is simple. nothing has changed about covid-19. this is still a highly contagious virus hitting our community extremely hard, especially communities of color. we have talked about the numbers in georgia, the underlying health conditions that make this virus even worse. and all of those conditions are present in our state. what is feet like to me is that there is this testing of the borders and willingness to sacrifice people for the same of our economy. i am not willing to sacrifice my mother who is a senior and certainly not my children all of whom are asthmatic. that's the way we have to look at across the board. who would you be willing to sacrifice for the sake of the economy. i don't think any of us would be willing to do that which is more reason for us
