in afghanistan. the taliban today is militarily and politically stronger than at any time since 911. and i believe the taliban in its peace negotiations with the united states have told us exactly what we want to hear in order to encourage us to leave the country. i don't believe what they're saying about what their intentions are. in fact, i believe that their intention, which is absolutely achievable, is to overthrow the current afghan government and a dictatorship based on sharia law. i also believe the taliban will provide safe haven to al qaeda and that it will not do what is necessary to prevent al qaeda from again becoming a significant threat to the united states of america. the ties between the two groups are just too close. years and years of fighting side-by-side and years and years of shedding blood together, years and years of inter-marriages of their children. these two groups are not, in my mind, separable. mr. chairman, to sum up, i believe strongly that we need to stay on this watch
