someone in your garage told nascar but it was nascar that told you. and i think that's important, because i think there are people wondering, oh, did somehow this get made up? now, this was a noose. the fbi refers to it as a noose. there are images that have been floating around that some people can see, we're putting up on the screen right now, it's a noose, or looks like it was a noose. it was being used apparently as a garage pull to help close the garage door. you have been in a lot of garages. have you ever seen a noose or something that look loose used as a garage pull? >> i have never seen a noose personally in my life. i have seen a lot of garage pulls. we have had a lot of garages growing up, racing out of. and we simply had a tiny knot at the bottom of it to pull and nowadays you just press a button and the garage goes down. but yes, it was in fact a noose as a garage pull, so there are two sides of it and both are true and correct. but yeah. >> but you can see why it was of concern. i mean, why nascar was concerned, why someone who saw it i

he is the only black driver in the nascar top circuit. he has responded on twitter writing this will not break me. i will not give in, nor will i back down. nascar is investigating the incident and expressed outrage in a statement saying officials will do everything they can to identify the person or persons responsible and eliminate them from the sport. nascar's president reinforcing that saying that person will be banned for life. bubba wallace was recently thrust into the spotlight as an active voice in the black lives matter movement and led the successful push to have confederate flags banned at all nascar races. and still as fans arrived at track on sunday, you see this. they saw this confederate flag with a defund nascar banner flying over the raceway. along with confederate memorabilia sold just across the street. and just moments ago, before the start of the race, an incredible show of support from nascar drivers and pit crew members as they pushed wallace's car down the pitted by a large procession of people. so let's start ther

it's brave for nascar to do this. maybe more than any other sport. nascar taking a stand like this. they are risking losing a huge number of their supporters. do you think this -- they're going to take a huge financial hit? >> i think it will be more better that nascar is taking a stance, especially bubba wallace. most of the drivers, the younger drivers, they came up with bubba. they have been with bubba since he was little like ryan blaney, ty dillon. guys like that when they first came out, ty dillon sat on instagram and did a post and asked bubba wallace how did he feel going through this? how did he feel with george floyd and bubba expressed his feelings. and i think now that nascar sees that the drivers like jimmie johnson and all the older drivers and younger drivers are not going to put up with feeling uncomfortable when you get to the track and seeing a big confederate flag. steve phelps, the president of nascar, and all executive level, is not going to take it anymore. might take a hit with fans but we'll gain a whole new base. and bubba wallace already gained a new base o

of the fans of nascar are very supportive of the initiatives that nascar has put into place as well. this isn't a matter of just, you know, black folks being happy that this is the case. this is the situation where a lot of the white fans are happy that this is happening, that it's long overdue. >> yeah, for sure. in terms of how you diversify the sport, you have been candid in calling out big corporations and calling on, rather, big corporations that sponsor these drivers and saying you have a lot of the power here to affect change. >> that's right, poppy. i mean, you know, the sport is driven by money. people don't realize how much it costs to race in the cup series. it's an 18 to $20 million proposition each year, per car. so the cars don't run around on the track on their own and corporate america is key to the success of is drivers being out there on the track. and the access to that capital has been something that's been lacking in the african-american community. i mean, we had not gotten the financial support that allows to race on the top level for any extended period of time

and i encourage nascar. we'll have the conversation to remove the flag. >> we saw the confederate flag fly over with a defund nascar banner. it's no coincidence this happened days after nascar banned the confederate flag. and had black lives matter scheme when he had it on his car. >> there's going to be plenty push back. this is not the only one. it's going to continue for a long time. and for african-americans the confederate flags means the same to african-americans as a swastika does to jewish people. it's demeaning, it's more than demeaning. it represents the support of slavery. treason. it's -- for this country to survive socially, we have to get through this. or we're not going to make it until 2050. we'll be done. >> why do you think people are so defiant about this symbol of racism as you compared it to a swastika. why so defiant and why is it allowed to fester in this way? >> well, nascar is taking a step. it's 50 years late. but they have taken a step. you never see this in any other major sportin

and now nascar yeah it's interesting because the confederate flag has become synonymous with nascar and it's fair to say when i was going through social media that black america is actually really stunned by the decision to ban the flag because it has become so ingrained and i remember going to one race one time involving never to return because there are people wearing the confederate flag and waving the confederate flag and i just felt so uncomfortable that people felt like this was a way to celebrate and complete while completely ignoring what this flag means to so many african-americans which is enslavement and oppression and how on funds taking this right now well i think that bubble wallace has a very strong fan base and he's the one african-american racer who is a part of this and he decided to use his platform and the social justice justice movement now to make a change and so he has a lot of support he went on twitter saying no one should feel uncomfortable when they come to a nascar race it starts with the. confederate flag get them out of here there is no place for them and s

wallace is the only black driver in nascar's top racing circuit. he's also been an outspoken supporter of the black lives matter movement that appears on his car in the wake of george floyd. this comes weeks after wallace pushed nascar to ban displays of the confederate flag. joining us now is andy scholes. this is really shocking. you know the sport better than me and where this took place there's lots of cameras monitoring where these cars are kept, et cetera. limited staff is allowed to go there. does this provide a path to discover who did this? >> well, jim, should give nascar an advantage in terms of trying to figure out who did this. nascar say they are outraged about what happened and determined to find out what did this, and they just want to eliminate them from the sport. nascar put out a statement about what happened saying they are angry and they are outraged and cannot state strongly enough how seriously we took this heinous act. the noose was found in a re-restricted area, us a mentioned, jim. fans and media are not allowed near these
