lead cnn. our coverage on cnn continues right now. >> this is cnn breaking news. >> welcome to our viewers in the united states and around the world. wolf blitzer is off today. i'm jim acosta in the situation room and we're following breaking news. the coronavirus death toll in the u.s. now nearing 128,000 people as cases rise in 37 states prompting at least 19 of them to pause or roll back reopening. the crisis in california is so bad that the governor there has just ordered almost 75% of the state back to near shutdown with all indoor activities in 19 counties closed for at least the next three weeks. that includes museums, theaters, dine-in restaurants. california joins georgia and arizona all setting another one day record number of new cases in the last 24 hours. all of this apparently lost on president trump who claimed a short time ago that his administration, quote, did it all right when it comes to the pandemic and that the virus will, quote, sort of just disappear. we begin with cnn n

cnn meteorologist derek van dam is tracking hurricane anhanna. we saw some strong pictures from texas, is that the worst of it or the beginning? >> the worst of the storm has passed because it is no longer actually a hurricane. it is now a tropical storm. good morning, kim. good morning to our viewers. just listening to ed's video a moment ago talking about how texas and specifically southern texas is the hot spot for some of the coronavirus hospitalizations, and infection rates, now you put on top of that a landfall of a hurricane. that's a threat multiplier, having two crises on top of each other. the hurricane that made landfall took place yesterday at 5:00 p.m. local time, right along padre island, a barrier island in the southern tip of texas. wind speeds at landfall around 5:00 p.m. were around 90 miles per hour. the good news is as i already mentioned the storm is starting to dissipate it will rain itself out over the next 24 to 36 hours across southern texas and into northeastern mexico. in fact, the eyewall, the remnants of the storm now

the agency tells cnn information is not ready yet. the white house has tried to bury cdc guidance on reopening the country before. president trump, of course, wants schools to open even though many districts are resisting him. dallas is the latest city to delay opening buildings. just yesterday the white house press secretary tried to make the case that science is on the side of opening schools. >> he says open, he means open in full, kids being able to attend each and every day at their school. the science should not stand in the way of this. >> she cited a reputable study that showed coronavirus poses less of a risk to children than the seasonal flu. the real risk that many experts are worried about is that children will spread covid to their teachers or relatives. >>> this has created a nightmare situation for farmers. some states have to roll back or pause. that puts farmers back in limbo. makes it hard to plan ahead. one farmer told cnn he is sitting on a surplus of 24,000 eggs and has no idea if or when things will stabilize. pl

you're watching cnn. and the breaking news on the spread of covid-19 in the united states, the number of americans who have been infected could be as many as 6 to 24 times higher than the total number of reported cases. that is according to the centers for disease control which analyze results from ten different cities and states between march and early may. and the startling statistic comes as the u.s. inches closer and closer to 4 million confirmed cases. and while half of the nation is holding steady or showing a downward trend, the other half is still seeing an explosion. 27 states have now paused or rolled back their reopenings. hospitals nationwide continue to be pushed to their limits. we're now just 1,000 patients away from the peak that we reached in april. think about that. and when it comes to testing, one major lab said americans could wait as long as two weeks to learn their results. all of this is happening as president trump steps before the media in just a couple of hours for his first whi

cnn's david mckenzie joins me now from johannesburg. so, david, how south africa's medical system coping with this increase in cases? >> reporter: well, certainly they are taking strain, rosemary. i've been speaking to doctors and physicians over the last few days, and here in the province, at least, they say they're managing to cope with the surge of parents, but that's it is a difficult prospect. there are also cases surging now in an adjacent province. so large parts of the country are now seeing the surge since they started to ease the lockdown in the beginning of june. today, rosemary, the schools will close, public schools, for at least a month for most students. that's a pretty controversial decision. many people obviously publicly supporting it to try and stop the transmission in the schools. but the official opposition is saying that they could take the government to court because they say it's irrational. so that earlier sort of blanket solidarity within south africa i think is cracking somewhat as the surge strains people's w
