jim clyburn was 80 years old. emmett till would have been 79 on saturday. and i just think about all of the pain and the trauma that news men have seen throughout their lives. i look at all of the blood that has been shed from the edmund pettus bridge and all of the things that had to happen from the '64 and '65 voting rights act and king assassinated in april of '68 and how much men and women have been through so we have the progress that we have today. i think about mother e manual church in the moment state of south carolina and the blood that was shed. and when you see john lewis resting today, you just want him to rest in power because he did so much work. and then when you have mitch mcconnell and others who are up there, you do realize that we still have so much work to do. because the difference between john lewis and others who do not espouse the same beliefs is that john lewis understood that justice and freedom were verbs. he understood that freedom is not free in this country and he lived a life as such. so the void is going to be huge. but one

king inspired me. >> joining us now, a grends of the great congressman, jim clyburn. thank you so much for joining us. i'm so sorry about the loss of this dear friend of yours. i know you've been friends with him since 1960. when was the last time you spoke with him ? tell us about that conversation. >> i spoke with john last saturday. we talked on the phone. we expressed love for each other. we talked about his illness some time ago. we knew that it would come to this. didn't know which day. last saturday when all kinds of rumors were floating around, i called him and we talked. it was a pleasant conversation. i end up telling him that stop talking. i would talk and conserve his energy. it was a pleasant conversation. >> lewis was obviously a towering, almost larger than life individual in terms of his dignity, his courage. your relationship with him, as i noted, stretched back to october 1960 when you were both organizing protests during the civil rights movement. tell us about those days and about how your friendship per s -- persevered for so long. >> it had a lot

south carolina congressman jim clyburn, member of the democratic leadership. long before they were colleagues in the lower chamber, congressman clyburn and john lewis were friends who grew up in the movement, and congressman, again, so honored to have you this afternoon. you're taking this moment to honor your friend by permanently linking him to the voting rights act that he fought for through the years. re-introducing hr-4 as the john lewis voting rights act. tell us the message that you're hoping to send to your colleagues, and the nation, by doing that? >> well, thank you, craig, for having me. everybody knows that john came in to prominence, though with me it happened back in 1960 when we first met on moorhouse college campus, but for the rest of the world it was 1965. five years later on the edmund pettus bridge when he came within an inch of being killed trying to get the right to vote. at the time of that march, only 2% of african-americans in alabama were registered to vote. and he was there with others. i think some 600, trying to get the right to vo

jim clyburn, feels the way most do in washington, the sadness and the loss. even though they were on the same side of the aisle, john lewis had friends on both sides of the aisle. he made an impact like no other. i know that he spoke to you on your first day in congress. what did he say to you? >> well, you know, he approached me and he said something like, well, you must be one of the new freshmen, and he said, i'm john lewis. just let me know how i can help. and, of course, everybody knows john lewis. i mean he was just bigger than life. to me he was someone who is very similar to the hymns of churches. i've been around the pope, the head of the ee pes co-poll church, the mormon church. they have an aura of peacefulness and good heart that. was john lewis. he didn't just talk it. he walked it. he lived it. and he will always remain the conscience of congress. >> what impact did he have on your career? >> well, you know, again, he was always -- just always ready to help. i remember a couple of times i wanted to stay and make a one-minute speech, which is whe

jamil, do you have any confidence that the bill that jim clyburn is said to sfwro deuce will pass and be signed by this president? >> doini don't have any confide that any bill passed by this congress will be signed by this president. john lewis understood the racism of this president very well and called it out. when i spoke to him in 2019, he called it out. he said this president is racist. when i asked him what he would say to his friend martin luther king, he said he would express to his friend that there's a president that doesn't understand the struggle that he articulated. i think what we need to do is first have a president that understands the fight for which they bled and almost died for and in martin's case did die for. that's the fight, as martin said, make this country be true to what it said on paper. not give african-americans more per se than white people or other privileged groups but make us equal. give us the same opportunities to fulfill the american promise that others have had. that's all they've been asking for. >> presill iscilla what happens in alabama and wha

jim clyburn joins us now. what's been on your mind about your friendship and your time working together? >> well, john and i, as you said, met in 1960. and for almost 60 years, we've called each other friends. we often talk about the fact that as we were sitting in, kneeling in, praying in, we never thought that we would land in the united states congress together or serve 27 years together. he and i often talked about our dreams, our aspirations. we talked about what the movement meant to us. he met his wife in the movement. i met my wife in jail because of a sit-in. they were both librarians and they became great friends, and i'll never forget when john saw each other and the way they embraced. he was just a good, good friend. and so several days ago, several weeks maybe, but right after the sort of acceptance of the black lives matter movement, you could see it, we could feel it. and we talked about it. and he said to me, we must not let this thing die. we must not let happen to this movement what happened

clyburn. first of all, we mourn with you. we're so sorry for the loss of your friend. i know this is a hard question in many ways, because of all the years, the decades you spent together. but in that time is there a memory, congressman, that you'll cherish most? >> yes, i think so. about that long friendship -- doing these activities, and i met him in the same way. and then got to know each other. they were both librarians. they spent a lot of time on the phone, but with each other. sometimes -- i wouldn't call it scheming, but the thing that really stand out with me was the respect in kansas city, missouri, when the two of us were honored by the truman foundation. the truman library. that evening probably stands out with me as the most memorable one. >> you actually taped a tribute to your friend, and you purposely did it at sunrise. why was that important to you? >> well r, last night i stated front of the tv going back and forth, listening to all the tributes. and when i finally went to be
