as katie nielsen reports the tides have turned in favor of the fire crews. but all that could quickly change. >> reporter: the humidity is up and temperatures are down, the strategy for tonight is to try to take advantage of this time when the fire is less active and get some containment lines around it mostly using bulldozers. everyone is on edge about what could happen with another round of strong storms possible tonight. >> no plan yet. >> firefighters are still trying to figure out the best way to contain the three fires that now make up the marsh fire complex. they started sometime around 5:00 this morning probably due to lightning strikes. >> we saw lightning hit the hills and light on fire. >> genevieve said she was up early driving to work when she saw bright flashes of lightning. >> we saw fires in the hills. there's only one way it would t it had to be the lightning that struck and there were fires everywhere. >> reporter: local cattle ranchers advised firefighters about the best ways to access the rugged and remote areas where the fires are burnin

let's go to kpix 5 katie nielsen live with the latest for us. katie? >> reporter: yeah, so juliette, right now the latest we have from cal-fire is that these three fires together are about 850 acres. there's zero containment. what we just found out moments ago is that there are now mandatory evacuations along welch creek road that should affect about ten homes. but for the latest on what kind of conditions firefighters are facing right now, we would like to bring in alameda county fire public information officer. tell us a little bit about what those firefighters are actually experiencing up in the hills in >> we currently have three fires going on. very steep terrain with high temperatures and low humidity. our firefighters are working hard to get the fire out. where she resources that are coming all over the bay area from the local fire departments that are coming to assist. firefighters are working really hard, trying to stay hydrated, just trying to get this fire out. we're a little concerned about the road. we are trying to keep people safe. >> re

katie nielsen is live. >> we are downtown, this is where hundreds of residents are under an evacuation warning. around 12:30 this afternoon the alameda county sheriff issued mandatory evacuations for this area has a fire up on the ridge started moving down toward the homes. firefighters say it was the wind pushing flames closer to the homes, but the fire was able to bring in air support to stop the fires forward progress at the same time those winds calm down. that's when the mandatory evacuation order was downgraded to a warning. >> i am packing up anyway so we are going to take things on the safe side. >>> still looks like a lot of other residents were getting ready to leave this afternoon loading items into their cars. another issue for people living all the way at the top of the road is the lack of cell phone service. power has been out in the area since yesterday morning, then, without cell phone service or home internet they say they have no way of getting these changingvacuation orders, the sheriff's department does have additional deputies in the area to make sure that they are
