she lost in wisconsin. but more than that, you know, if you just look at the geography and the bases within each state, right? obviously, in the state of minnesota, you have this huge metropolitan area in minneapolis/st. paul that is sort of this base for democratic votes. you don't really have that in wisconsin. you have milwaukee, which isn't as big of a metropolitan area as minneapolis/st. paul, and democrats are quite reliant on the big votes coming out of madison, but you have seen this great degradation of the more rural base in wisconsin, so i think minnesota is the safer bet for democrats. but obviously, the difference between minnesota and wisconsin, if you look at the polling data, has shrunk over the last four years. >> to be clear, you'd rather be joe biden than donald trump with regard to these numbers, true? >> absolutely true! i mean, you'd much rather be ahead than behind, and joe biden's still up by five or six points, and if you break it down by the crosshairs, joe biden is doing better am

he's got to win wisconsin and do some other things too. if his folks are saying an issue like this in their view will help him in the state, where does he need help in wisconsin right now? what are the voters who are there for him in 2016 who have been missing so far? >> there's traditionally been a suburban rural coalition in wisconsin. what happened in 2016 is that he blew the doors off when it came to his performance with rural voters. we'd never really seen anything like it. but he did underperform in the suburbs and even in the republican suburbs. so obviously not much of a cushion having won that race by less than 0.8 of a percentage point. i think his path to victory starts with kind of trying to replicate that rural route that he produced in 2016. that's a challenge because there are parts of wisconsin -- there are rural parts that are purple and have a history of voting democratic and are very swingy. so it's not an easy bar to get over again. and also trying to do something about his suburban problem. you know, in the suburbs, th

we're seeing this play out in wisconsin this week. how important is it to understand the many ways in which white supremacy is deeply rooted throughout the country, not just in the south? >> it's essential that we understand that racism never was just a southern issue. that it was a national one and the misconception largely comes from the fact that most people think slavery as being a southern institution, race based slavery in particular when, in fact, it was a national one. i always like to talk about specifics. when i remind people of that. so in 1827, a man by the name of henry dodge moved to the wisconsin territory then, wasn't a state yet. dodge becomes a first territory governor of wisconsin and his name is all over monuments, parks, buildings in the state. very well-known. what isn't well-known is that henry dodge brought five enslaved people with him from his home state of missouri, toby, jim, leer, joe and tom who he held illegally enslaved in the wisconsin territory for over 11 years. slavery was supposed to be prohibited
