how does this play out in arizona? >> it's a significant issue in arizona. it's been politics here for the last decade with affordable care act. we worked awfully hard with governor a republican to expand medicaid in arizona. bipartisan. things are changing in arizona dramatically. we have not had a democratic control of the house since 1960s. and the senate since 1990s. it's close to flipping this time. we have five members of congress. nine member of congress. five are democrats. we did elect a liberal democrat two times to governor. this race this year is going to be one of the most interesting. i have been dealing with presidential elections going back toi eisenhower in 1956. in massachusetts. >> what are your conversations like with your neighbors in terms of this election and the issues that are important to them? healthcare or anything else. what's the conversation over the back fence been like? >> the pandemic has been one of the highly discussed issues. the inconsistent approach by the administration right now to handle that. and it seems to be cont

the big two moves were texas and arizona. and as i sort of previewed, it is -- they are sort of, you could say they would be our -- on the lean tipping point or toss-up tipping point. arizona in particular does seem to have tightened. is this natural tightening or something happening? >> yeah, chuck, of course we ended up interviewing a lot of strategists who are watching all of these presidential battleground states. we have looked at the public polling, private polling. and i think the consensus is joe biden is ahead in arizona. it's not by much and certainly a little less than he's ahead in states like in pennsylvania, michigan and wisconsin. and so you're right. is there another kind of category we could have? our friend nathan gonzalez and his team end up using tilt -- maybe tilt would be a good word here like tilt biden, but arizona, you know, i think the 2018 senate result between kyrsten sinema and martha mcsally was very instructive. mcsally won by 2 1/2 points. that may be the democratic ceiling even with the growin

we are so excited to be here in arizona today. later, we will talk with workers and small business owners who are working so hard and doing everything right, but they are still struggling to get by. they are who i was thinking about last night at the debate. this election, more than any other in our lifetime, will affect every part of our lives. with consequences that may last generations. and there is so much at stake. our nation is at a crossroads. just think, all at the same time, we are experiencing the pandemic, the recession, a reckoning on racial justice, a changing climate that is battering our coastlines and setting the west on fire, and the future of health care hangs on top of it all. because you see, president trump is in the supreme court right now trying to get rid of the affordable care act. and along with senate republicans, he is trying to jam through a supreme court justice who will do exactly that. who will rip away protections from as many as 2.8 million arizonans with pre-existing conditions. 2.8 arizonans wit

arizona, north carolina, key states as they get ready to approach the podium here. >> arizona has been so weird because this is barry goldwater's homestead, john mccain some states, republican, republican, republican state and trumpeted just minor in 2016 but there's no state that has taken such a sharp turn not just against drum, but in collateral damage down ballot for candidates like mick sally. i have remained a little skeptical that a state could swing so hard but survey after serving can reinforce it and it has a lot to do with coronavirus. you have a lot of older voters and you have a lot of suburban families in arizona who, like a lot of americans, have been aghast at the way the president has dealt with this. they've punished him for it. in his message there has to be that he's going to do better and get better at this and soon. >> bret: as we listen in to tucson, i will say, it's tough to judge enthusiasm in this covid-19 time but each one of these stops has had thousands and thousands of people in the joe biden campaign operates differently. they've had cars in parking lots

to pima county in tucson, arizona. why is the president spending so much time in arizona? is it helping, josh? >> well, i want to first note how politically significant being in arizona is any time during a presidential campaign. democrats have lost arizona in every election since 1948 except for 1996 when ross perot helped stip tip the state to bill clinton. trump is behind in the polls because he is losing the suburban maricopa county population, the biggest county in the state. he won't be there today. he is going more to the rural parts of arizona and near tucson but maricopa county voted for trump in 2016. it is suburban. always been republican and yet all the polling that we've seen including the fox arizona poll have shown joe biden polling ahead in the suburban parts of the state. and that's what is making arizona so competitive. what you are seeing president trump doing is trying to rally the maga conservative base out in the rural part of the state because he knows he is losing ground in the suburbs. >> sandr
