i will also say this, chuck. for the president himself, i think he knows that if there is a way for him to change some of this, right, to change the slide that he seems to be on, it's by getting out, getting out and doing rallies, talking to people, being out there. his coronavirus diagnosis means he has not been able to do that. and i can tell you that based on sources i've talked to this weekend, he is climbing the walls to be able to get out of the white house compound. he's in this sort of mode, as one person put it, where he's in his, you know, nobody's listening to me, i'm right and everybody else is wrong kind of attitude, where he feels like he wants to be flexing his muscles, getting out, dictating some of these things. the challenge, of course, is that he has a team of people around him who are trying to channel some of that energy, if you will, into a way that could be potentially productive, and there's a real question mark of whether the president is willing to go along with those things or not right

i'm chuck todd. a very busy day of headlines involving the president, the virus, his refusal to participate in next week's debate and last night's vp debate which may be the last debate of the cycle. we begin with disturbing breaking news. you are looking live at the state of michigan where state and federal law enforcement officials are about to announce they've charged six men who were conspiring to kidnap michigan's democratic governor gretchen whitmer while seeking assistance from local militia members. we're expecting to hear from the state's attorney general along with officials from the fbi and the michigan state police. here's what we do know so far. according to an affidavit that's been obtained by nbc news, early this year -- earlier this year, prosecutors say the fbi became aware of a group of individuals discussing the violent overthrow of certain government. as the plot was developing to target michigan's governor, the group sought help from a local militia group. the plans allegedly inv

two weeks ago, chuck schumer stood on the stage and said he wasn't going to waste the majority. we all know this could be a democratic senatorial primary candidate in a couple of years in new york and is demanding that we expand and pack the court's. if anybody thinks that this is a hypothetical or political stunt to raise awareness this is a clear andue present danger on wt happens in november. i believe chuck schumer will reduce the threshold to the majorityt and will move forward with an expansion of the supreme court and then after it's expanded, it will be packed with liberal activist judges and the cycle will go on and on and on. we need to raise the threshold, and this is a step in the right direction. depending on the outcome it's one that will rule the day if in fact chuck schumer delivers on the promise. the last thing i will leave you with is the vice president. he said i will tell you my position on packing the courts after the election. he's doing one or two things. he's either not telling the radical left he wouldn't expand the supreme court or he's not tellingo th

and it was a lengthy conversation, chuck. this was part of a cornell university event that i agreed to do where i interviewed dr. fauci. it's their homecoming week. look, i asked him, obviously, about many things. i asked him about the president's behavior and the messaging that happened at the white house last night when the president removed his mask. dr. fauci being careful to say he'd not directly take on the president or criticize the president but he did say, look, there are some things that should be universally practiced. masks. avoid i avoiding crowds. doesn't matter who you are. and then i did ask him directly about the comments you just mentioned. the president this morning comparing covid-19 to the flu. and appearing to diminish it and say that it's not that serious and here's what dr. fauci said in response. >> covid-19 is manifestations with the potential to make people very ill and kill deaths 7 34million infections in the united states and over a million deaths globally. so this is not a trivial disease. peopl
