jerome adams. dr. adams, i wanted to ask you, among other public health officials, have been urging people to stay home for the holidays, to forego large family gatherings. we've seen a lot of people traveling. tsa says that 7 million people were screened in the week leading up to christmas. are you concerned we're going to see another post-holiday surge? >> we're very concerned. we always see a little bit of a bump after holidays and sometimes a large bump. what the important thing for people to understand is, even if you travelled, doesn't mean you throw your hands up in the air and say oh well. there are measures you can take. the cdc recommends three to five days after travel or after you've been around people without a mask on you get tested. that means if you were exposed to asymptomatic spread, we can find out and limit your ability to spread to others. you should definitely stay away from vulnerable people, your grandmother, your aunt, over the next 14 days if you travelled so you don't give th

jerome adams. dr. adams, thank you so much for joining us. less than a year after this deadly virus emerged, the first americans have now been vaccinated today. you were on hand, i understand, for some of those vaccinations over at the george washington university hospital here in d.c. how historic is this accomplishment? >> well, this is just tremendous. and i'm smiling bigger than i smiled in a long time, because it has been a hard year for so many people out there, including me personally. my family, the people who i love. and today we really did get a shot of hope. i got to be at george washington medical center and see front line health care workers get vaccinated. we're not talking about development. we're not talking about, again, the approval process. actually vaccines going into arms. we got a long way to go, make no mistake about it. we still need to be appropriately cautious. we still need to be -- still need to understand how severe this virus is and the surge that is still going in the wrong direction, but we've got some hope fin

jerome adams of the white house coronavirus task force. dr. addams, great to have you on the program. let's hit that hard news right now. first of all, what is this new strain of coronavirus that is happening across the pond, as they say, and united kingdom? >> great place to start, and i talked with the head of the national institutes of health this morning about this. it's important for your viewers to know, variouses mutate. that's what they do. we've had dozens of mutations of sars-cov-2 that causes covid-19 this year alone, and it doesn't mean the virus is more dangerous, it doesn't even mean it's more contagious. it could be that this new variation in the u.k. happened to be the variant that was at a super-spreader event. but we are having a task force meeting and just about an hour, we'll talk about this, we'll make sure that following the science, something governor cuomo has always said we need to do. we are listening to nih, niad, the w.h.o., and the cdc. this doesn't change what we need to do paid we need to wear masks, wash hands,

jerome adams also received it with vice president pence. candidly, i think he will do more service because i can tell you in black and brown communities, there's still a very high level of distrust for good reason. the trump administration has failed many of these communities, and we've allowed for people to die at higher rates than necessary simply because of our failures as a national government. i do think these public displays can be important. i think they can also show that people -- that vice president pence felt it was safe enough for himself, his wife, his family. these can be helpful, they have to be reliable and trusted figures in the community. i know in some neighborhoods, it will be the small business owner who is revered and loved by the community. that might be the most important public figure. so i do think we need to kind of go with a little bit of humility. it's not just going to be the vice president or the speaker. it will be respected members of communities across the country, tribal nations, territories and rural amer

shannon: jerome adams is confident the new strain of coronavirus will not impact vaccination efforts in the us, not stopping new york governor andrew cuomo from pushing for new international travel restrictions we were just discussing. aishah hasnie has the story tonight. >> reporter: right now there are no confirmed cases of that uk strain in the new york area but it could be here already and that is why governor cuomo is trying to find out where exactly it could be, he wants to know that immediately calling the new york hospitals to start testing for this strain. the strain is set to be 70% more contagious and doctor anthony fauci does believe it is already here in the us. several other countries have already banned travel from the uk but doctor anthony fauci does not support a travel ban. on monday governor cuomo announced he did strike a deal with three airlines to require passengers from england to provide a negative covid-19 test before heading for the empire state but he says the federal government should test travelers from all countries calling it reprehensible that the trum
