he was the king of talk and the face of cnn for some 25 years. larry king became an icon through interviews, speaking with actors and sports figures, presidents and heads of state. a source close to his family said he had been hospitalized with covid-19 in early january. throughout his life he battled a number of major health problems, suffering several heart attacks and a lung cancer diagnosis in 1987, he underwent bypass surgery. he died this morning in los angeles. let's start with more on the life and legacy of the broadcasting legend, and my good friend, larry king. >> he was the king of talk. >> larry was the face of cnn. >> from presidents, to professional athletes. >> do you still face racism when you play? >> music royalty to actual royalty, movie stars to murderers. heads of state to captains of industry. >> is that a logical expansion bill for microsoft? >> no one captured pop culture like larry king on his iconic show. >> it was breaking news, it was long profiles, it was presidents. >> it was the most interesting show that we had. >>

if cnn is ever lost, go back to there. i know we get a lot of slings and arrows and we deserve a lot of them. but the foundational role of cnn, to father the news around the world is so important. even cnn's fiercest critics should want us out there gathering the news. i'm so thankful that you and your team keep that foundation strong for all of us. >> you know, brian, about the criticisms, i do want to talk about that. we're not perfect. we do our jobs. we get up in the morning. we're really hungry to do the job and provide the news to our viewers and readers everywhere. but we pump out a lot of content. we check what we do, and if we get it wrong, we correct it as soon as we can. we've had some mistakes. in fact, my department was set up because of the biggest earthquake in cnn's history back in 1998 called operation tailwind. we haven't had anything like that, but we have had a couple hiccups. but when you think of all the news and information that this giant news organization is responsible for, i stand by that record.

larry helped put cnn on the map. and reached viewers all around the world via cnn's international reach. ted turner recruited larry in 1985. he had a 9:00 p.m. time slot. he wanted to make a change. larry was a radio star, taking calls from listeners for hours every day. and ted turner thought that bringing larry to television would work. here's what ted said in a brand new statement, just in to cnn. he said waking up to the news of the passing of larry king felt like a punch to the gut. larry was one of my closest and dear es friends and in my opinion the world's greatest broadcast journalist of all time. one is the creation of cnn and the other is hiring larry king. ted turner going on to say like so many who worked with and knew larry he was a consummate professional, an amazing mentor to many and a good friend for all. the world has lost a true legend. that statement just in from ted turner. larry king's first day 1987 was mario cuomo, then the governor of new york and we've heard from andrew cuomo, mario's son,

earlier i spoke with cnn medical analyst dr. jonathan reiner and i asked him if that's enough and if the pace of the vaccine rollout will happen. >> as the weeks go on the percent of new vaccinations is going to drop until every day half the vaccinations are new vaccinations and half the vaccinations are the second dose. this is at least until the johnson & johnson single dose vaccine comes available. so we're actually going to be vaccinating fewer new people going forward than we are today. in order to get to herd immunity by this summer or certainly by the fall we need to do much better and i think we need to vaccinate about 2 million people per day. people are worried about the supply of vaccine but what we learned this weekend is that moderna and pfizer have been shipping every week about 12 to 18 million doses of vaccine. we're only giving about 9 million doses of vaccine so as of today 21 million shots had been administered. there are 41 million -- but 41 million doses have been delivered. we should be administering every
