meteorologist kari hall tracking the current conditions. good morning to you, kari. >> good morning. we just had a wind gust of 81 miles per hour near clayton. these winds are really gusting this morning and it's coming along with some warm temperatures. we were all out over the weekend like wow, this is pretty nice but in the back of your mind, you have to think, okay, it's not supposed to be this warm and then when we look at where we're headed for today and the record high temperatures, back in 2014, we had some really high temperatures, but remember, we were in the middle of a very bad drought, and so we are approaching that once again as these temperatures reach into the mid-70s for to the record high today is 69 degrees, but we're looking at a high of about 75 today. in san francisco the record is 70 but we're looking at low 70s here as well. oakland, look at that, 76 degrees is what we're expecting today but the record is just 67 degrees, and normal is about 58 degrees this time of year, we're usually getting some rain and much coole

we want to start with meteorologist kari hall timing that off and on again rain. i made it from the car to the door, i was so happy, kari. >> yeah. and we're going to have some of those times where it's raining hard and then stops and not all of us in the bay area are hearing that rain hitting the roof right now. it's mainly south of san francisco over towards the east bay and really hitting the south bay at this point. this is a typical atmospheric storm setup where there's a huge case of the haves and have nots as the south bay has it and we will see the heavy rain continuing to move through and stalled out over some of the same areas. you can see the bright reds from freemont towards sunnyvale and lighter towards east palo alto. as we move towards the east bay it's lighter in antioch and discovery bay. a look at our microclimates and talk about more rain in the forecast. mike, a lot of wet roads for this morning commute. >> that's right, kari. i borrowed the data that we share interest your commute and put it on my maps and showing folks to get an idea of how t

. >> we'll start with kari hall who's timing this all out. kari? >> good morning. we are in a microclimate weather alert ahead of the changes that we'll see as we head into the next 36 hours. it starts out with a dry morning for us. we have a little bit more time to prepare for this heavy rain that's set to move in later today. the storm, this atmospheric river that we've been talking about, still off the coast, and will get a boost from all of the moisture that is picking up over parts of the pacific. we are going to see as we go into today that rain filling in, moving from north to south across the bay area. some of the heaviest rain arrives tonight. we'll talk more about that, as well as what you can expect coming up in a few minutes. sierra? >> thank you. >>> people living in burn scarred areas of the mountains are bracing for a possible punch from tonight's arriving storms. deputies spent yesterday warning people to evacuate. look at the areas in red under the evacuation order. this is along the san mateo, santa cruz area. areas in yellow are under the evacuat

meteorologist kari hall timing the all out for us. pretty big juicy storm. let's check in with kari and we're still not getting a break today. >> right. something like storm ranger really needed and some of these low storms that move through the bay area and so we're seeing it in parts of the north bay really drying ou heavy. take a look at how much rain we've measured in the santa cruz mountains. over 8 inches of snow or not snow at this point, it's 8 inches of rain. it sounds like a snow total. we're going to see really heavy rain continuing especially across the santa cruz mountains into the south bay. we'll continue to add up on these rainfall totals for today. we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. what's going on for the commute? >> kari, i'm trying to track down the details on three dozens incidents in the chp report, many are spinouts. we'll take a look at the dublin interchange camera, a camera facing the dublin interchange. the taillights away from us are slowing to 580, just underneath that dublin interchange. the map shows you what we'

meteorologist kari hall is tracking how long it will last. good morning, kari. >>> let's see what storm ranger is picking up now, in the north bay rain earlier this morning moving through santa rosa and parts of the north bay. to the south spotty sprinkles here as well as we are seeing some off-and-off showers in the santa cruz mountains. we haven't seen a lot of it moving through san jose because as you notice in the loop here the rain falls apart before it moves into san jose. we had some in san francisco as well as the north bay. it will quickly move out. we'll continue to track this as well as more updates for the weekend forecast. mike, how is it looking with the wet roads for the morning community? >> over my shoulder we have the green. over the bay we take that map to full screen. slippery conditions. not major flooding but definitely slicker conditions. be careful out there. we'll zoom down to the south bay where we have a couple of crashes. one circled at the bottom is the on ramp north 1st at northbound 880. an overturned rig. those

first, let's start with meteorologist kari hall timing everything out. good morning, kari. >> good morning. we saw some of the heavier rain moving through during the overnight hours and now we're left with lingering light scattered showers that we're seeing still left on stormranger, our multiple doppler radar. we're still getting a pretty steady downpower just south of san jose through morgan hill and just north of gilroy, so expect the roads to be wet on 101 if you're about to head out for work. we're also seeing the scattered rain over parts of the east bay and it's going to continue with the waves of rain that we could see coming throughout the morning into the afternoon. much of the north bay still covered with scattered light rain so w

meteorologist kari hall is timing it out for us. i know that's pretty easy to do, though. >> but when you think about like snowfall totals, that's pretty extraordinary, right. so we're going to see that as we go throughout the week. we are feeling already some cold air out ahead of there storm system. but this will set theow. take a look at what you'll feel as you head out in santa rosa. we're below freezing. 32 degrees in hayward, also below freezing in morgan hill. livermore at 32 degrees. when we talk about the snow that we'll see on some of our bay area mountains, we could see the potential of getting several inches of snow on mt. hamilton, mt. diablo, as well as some of our north bay mountains. we're also going to see some really heavier rain, especially in our values over the next couple of days and along the coastline. we'll be tracking that, and i'll have a look at how much rain you can expect over the next several days. that's coming up in a few minutes. mike, heading out the door, any issues for morning commuters? >>> a wa

let's check in with meteorologist kari hall this morning. she's really tracking these winds and how long they're going to stick around. kari? >> yes, so some of the things that we look at will be the high winds, along with high dry the vegetation is and so we are going to have critical fire danger, critically high fire danger today in some spots, and as we deal with these high winds especially in the high elevations above 1,000 feet, some of those gusts will continue over 60 miles per hour. we've already seen some of those wind gusts this morning and some of us in the valleys will start to feel those high winds later this evening. so we'll talk about when we're expecting the peak of those winds coming up, as you get ready to head on the roads this morning, may already be gusty for you this morning, but overall we have a smooth flow of traffic around the bay area on this holiday. i'll have another update coming up again in a few minutes. >> sounds good. we'll check back with you, kari. >>> 5:40. the chp will answer questions around the chaos.

meteorologist kari hall is tracking conditions. kari, what's it looking like for the rest of the day? >> it's going to be off and on. we are going to see some breaks in the rain, some of that heavier rain rolled through late last night and now as we wake up and get a chance to assess all of the damage around the house, we did see still some scattered showers, but we are going to have once again a chance of some rain lingering today. let's head to the south county where we've seen some heavy rain just kind of park north of morgan hill. it really hasn't moved. our stormranger giving us a very retailed view of what's going on. we've also seen the rain not move from the richmond-san rafael bridge. it's also extending parts of the east bay and over towards hercules and just south of vallejo and will still have some times of heavy rain. but what's going on here as we can see, the wide view of this storm system, all of that heavy snow following off the sierra. still the center of the storm still to the north of us and that's usually where

meteorologist kari hall is here. we're going to get that rain, kari. >> yes. we've seen it, hit or miss across the bay area. we're tracking it with storm ranger as we get a look at our mobile doppler radar. it's giving us a very clear view of exactly where it's raining, because it's been dotting the bay area. not all of us are seeing it right now. wanted to give you a closer view of the rain that's moving across the richmond, san rafael bridge. that's going to be moving off to the north and east over toward vallejo. we've seen some of those showers moving over toward mt. diablo, the area of martinez, walnut creek and concord. some of the showers moving through around livermore, fremont and covering much of san jose, as well as ove parts of sunnyvale and moving toward showers moving through. it could be heavy at times. we're also watching out for the possibility that some of these cells may be packing some thunderstorms. there could be some brief, heavy downpours as well as small hail and some gusty winds. we'll be watching this as we get a lot of energy buildi

"today in the bay's" kari hall tracking how long this wet weather will last. we knew it was coming, kari, and we certainly need it. >>> sure do. i mean, this is something that's been a nice, welcome change as we start out this new year this morning. we are going to see the rain moving from the north bay and then across the rest of the bay area. let's check it out. here is a look at storm ranger right now showing that rain in the north bay. and soap as we get a closer look we can see a lot of green showing some light showers across much of sonoma county moving into napa county and some light rain also falling in marin county. a lot of this first wave of rain will be some of the heaviest rain we'll see this week even though there are quite a few storms out there and also will bring a decent amount of snow for the sierra. a look at this long connection moving down all the way close to hawaii. so this is going to give it a slight boost in the rainfall totals but also giving us some high winds. let's talk about this wind forecast because we're going to stop it righ

we want to check in with meteorologist kari hall as well. are we going to get any windows of opportunity in this or is it just pretty much all day? >> it's going to be off and on all day. there will be some breaks. we've seen some of the heavier rain push to the south of us but look at all of the green we still have on storm ranger as some of the light rain continues into this morning so it's going to be spotty today. another round of heavy rain rolls back in tonight and there's a chance for thunderstorms. we're still going to have at times some gusty winds and that low snow that we've seen on some of our bay area hills. as we mentioned, up to about 1,500 feet and above. also some isolated flood issues will continue for today, especially in those burn scar areas. as we go through today, we're going to see once again some breaks, but there will be some hit-or-miss showers continuing. that heavy rain to the south starts to roll back up and we are going to see another round of that coming in between late tonight and early tomorrow morning. we'l

let's look at the forecast right now meteorologist kari hall. >> good morning, and even though we are seeing some nice spring-like weather across the bay area, i do have some things i am watching as we head through the forecast. we have these big waves returning to the coastline, and that will make it dangerous for people in this warm weather wanting to head to the beach. we've been watching out for the dangerous wave conditions as we approach near record high temperatures, reaching into the low 70s for today, and by sunday, as we get ready to transition to some cooler weather, we'll see some big winds picking up. let's get a look at today's high and morgan hill reaching 71 degrees, los gatos looking at a high of 70. for the east bay we'll see some upper 60s and up to 65 in oakland today, pleasanton looking at a high of 69, and some short sleeved weather along the coast in half moon bay. palo alto reaching 66 and for san francisco downtown 63 degrees, and sonoma today will see a high of 68 degrees. now, as we look at what's going on, on the bigger scale, there is this big storm system

now we'll send it over to meteorologist kari hall. kari? >> bob, you were talking about those big waves. those have been driven by the storms off the coast. we also have king tides, which is a higher gravitational pull due to the alignment of the sun, the moon and the earth. so we're actually during the winter months closer to the sun and it's also the way they are aligned, it's pulling up that water and making it come further to the inland areas. we will see those king tides moving in for the coastal areas between late morning as well as again tomorrow morning right before noon. now today we're still looking at those big breakers coming in, but we also have these long periods of swells. that means you have a wave that comes up, but it takes several seconds before the next wave comes up. so you're drawn further out into the ocean. you may get also caught up in a rip current that could pull you under as well. some of those sneaker waves means one of the waves comes up higher than the other ones, so you need to stay well away from the coastli

meteorologist kari hall tracking every blip. >> yeah, we have seen that rain mostly in the north bay during the morning. now it's working its way down the peninsula into parts of the east bay and getting ready to approach the south bay. but we have also seen some pockets of heavy rain. that has been moving a little bit closer to palo alto as well as sunnyvale, moving to campbell and milpitas, and also some of those pockets of some of that steady rain moving through parts of the downtown area approaching san jose as well as the east bay, especially in the tri-valley, we see the yellows and reds on storm ranger, indicating heavier rain. also the winds picking up. there is a lot more where that came from. we will see several waves of this storm system coming in through the week, but it's churning up the high waves. we could see some breakers again today reaching over 25 feet. very dangerous conditions right there along the coastline. you coudo not want to be anywhe close to the water. i will have an update as we look at our forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> it's a good reminder. s

meteorologist kari hall is tracking our forecast for the day and for the week. good morning. >> yes. so good morning. we're starting out with fog in some spots, not all of us seeing it. look at the visibility that we have up around napa. only a quarter of a mile, but once again that fog is not very widespread. heading back to the east bay, if you're home schooling and looking for that chance to get outside, if you want some warmer weather, wait until about noon, 1:00. our temperatures will reach into the upper 50s and we'll get some sunshine today. we'll talk about a warming trend in the forecast coming up. mike, how is it looking for the commute? >> we continue to trend with mostly speed limit readings over here. the green sensors on the map, let's pull up the full screen, enjoy the virtual drive. taking you to san francisco, disabled vehicle reported at 280 at jn new year's egeneva. no slowdown reported. in the east bay, westbound 80 at san pablo, a disabled vehicle may be blocking one lane. watch that. in fairfield, that crash, no major injuries there. let's

meteorologist kari hall has another look at our forecast. this rain is a welcome sight. we always need it in california. >>> absolutely with this extreme drought going on. that's where we've seen the more measurable rain for this morning as the system quickly moves through but it's starting to clear up around ukiah and you can see the back edge as it continues to move elsewhere across the bay area with light rain this morning. all of this pushing up along the coastline. we could see breakers reaching up to over 25 feet today. st so it's going to be dangerous. once the storm system moves out, we have a nice afternoon. i know some people will want to get out and enjoy it. what's ahead for the weekend coming up. mike, what's happening now with the commute? >>> kari, i have to say not a lot. very quiet on the chp report. i don't want to jinx anything. let's look at the roads. the maps are moving smoothly with the green sensors all around the perimeter. a little slowing in san jose and that cleared up. the same thing for the tri-valley. the slowing for 84 cleared up. a little

we'll get over to meteorologist kari hall timing out the friday forecast. it was nice to see the radar with the rain moving out a bit. >> yeah, it's been a very impressive with this atmosphere moving in and now starting to move out. it is giving us a break, giving that rain a chance to soak into the ground. we're still seeing lingering showers on storm ranger. we'll be tracking that as the storm moves off toward the east. we'll talk more about what is ahead in the forecast coming up. mike, what's going on right now for the commute? >> breaking news but breaking toward the better over here as we look at lafayette, eastbound 24 at oak hill the earlier crash blocking half of highway 24 then cleared. now we're looking at green sensors there but green highlighting there. blue across the benicia bridge. some puddling and ponding. the arrow shows you westbound 580, still a slow drive right at the split with the warren freeway. highway 13. the earlier wires have been cleared from 580 but there may still be a crew in the area. so use caution and use caution on slick

meteorologist kari hall has another look at our familiar. >>> good morning. it may still be wet out there even after the rain has moved on. the cars ahead of you may be kicking up water off the roads, some of the heaviest rain over the north bay and we are tracking it with storm ranger, mobile doppler radar, with some of the showers. as we get a closer look across sonoma county the light rain is falling and we've seen it sweeping through other parts of the bay area but still holding off in the north bay. we'll see this quickly moving out by this afternoon. that's coming up in a few minutes. mike, any major issues for the morning commute? >>> not major issues, just a word of caution as you're slowing down on on and off ramps. the green highlighted portions around the bay continues to move around mostly over there in contra costa county. along the peninsula from time to time as well as in the south bay as traffic flows smoothly. just got the update. i checked the computer. it looks like the ram ms both on ramps from first street to north and southbound 880 have

"today in the bay's" kari hall tracking how long this wet weather will last. and how much we should get. good morning, kari. >>> good morning. it's so nice to see this rain coming in. we've got storm ranger powered up and tracking it mostly across the north bay where we're seeing some of the light rain falling. we head down to marin county. it's getting a little bit heavier here. watch out for the downpours around mill valley. for the tri-valley it's still dry. you'll probably make it on without the rain coming in but we'll see the rain arriving in spots like dublin as we head to about 10:00 or 11:00 this morning. i'm tracking it all. i'll have another update. mike, how is it looking right now for the bay area commute? >>> kari, so far, i guess continuing the last couple of weeks we have a lighter volume of traffic out there. a few little changes today. as we look at the maps the conditions are the concern. over here the big view shows no major issues. we will zoom out. what we didn't see last week, we will see now, highway 84 a little bit of slowing. actually

first, let's start with meteorologist kari hall timing everything out. good morning, kari. >> good morning. we saw some of the heavier rain moving through during the overnight hours and now we're left with lingering light scattered showers that we're seeing still left on stormranger, our multiple doppler radar. we're still getting a pretty steady downpower just south of san jose through morgan hill and just north of gilroy, so expect the roads to be wet on 101 if you're about to head out for work. we're also seeing the scattered rain over parts of the east bay and it's going to continue with the waves of rain that we could see coming throughout the morning into the afternoon. much of the north bay still covered with scattered light rain so we're going to see more of this activity throughout the day. we are not done with this system, even though some of the heavier rain has shifted to the south. it's going to roll back to the north later on tonight so i'll have the timeline of that for you coming up in a few minutes. mike, what's going on right now with t

let's look at the forecast with meteorologist kari hall. we have the weekend off to rest a little bit. >> absolutely. and it's going to be a nice weekend. now we're watching still some storms around the region. take a look at this big one that we have just off the coast, but all of that rain is targeting the pacific northwest, and it's just going to miss us here in the bay area as it does stay to the north, but it's also going to create some big breakers today, so we have another high surf advisory that will be going up at 11:00, it continues through tomorrow evening, and some of those breakers may reach over 20 feet, and it's really been dangerous along the coastline. we've seen the potential for those rip currents and rogue waves, those are the waves that come up a lot higher than some of the previous waves, but even if we're just trying to make it through home schooling today, we're going to see some sunshine. let's head to san ramon, we are starting out with some low 50s, and if you get a break in between those virtual classes, head out

we go to kari hall. kari, that radar behind you looks like a fire hose that is just aimed right smack dab at the station. >> that's a good description because that's what this atmospheric river has been like for the bay area. only blasting certain areas with some really heavy rain fall. and it is slowly moving. it's been going back and forth moving up and down. right now it is starting to push back down. it is moving through parts of the south bay. so let's get a closer look. we have been able to get a of s mountain. it is right over downtown san jose. give it a few more minutes. that rain is going to lighten up. it is still raining quite hard, but it is also going to start to get a little lighter here within the next few minutes. but no broke here for the south county. it is still going to be raining pretty hard at a steady pace as it continues to move out of the santa cruz momountains. for the tri valley, we're still looking at the more moderate to heavy rain fall in some of those areas. but then as we
