good morning, i'm scott mcgrew. marcus washington has some time off. kari, you were talking about an 81-mile-an-hour gust. that's amazing. >> yes, and i got a higher one, 83 miles per hour right now in parts of the north bay near the healdsburg hills. those winds are really roaring in the upper levels of the atmosphere, but here in the valley, we're not feeling it so much but you want to be careful about that because our winds will continue to get lower and lower into the valleys as we go into today which may be a prolonged damaging wind event and we've also had some really warm temperatures near record highs again today, as well as the fire danger, so we're watching out for that, and taking a look at these current temperatures, this is where we're starting. this is already above our normal high temperature. take a look at that, it's 70 degrees in santa rosa and it's because of those high winds. let's get a look at your morning commute as you get ready to head out. heads up that chp issued that wind advisory through the altamont pass as well as our bri

i'm scott mcgrew, in for marcus washington. grab your umbrella. meteorologist kari hall is here. we're going to get that rain, kari. >> yes. we've seen it, hit or miss across the bay area. we're tracking it with storm ranger as we get a look at our mobile doppler radar. it's giving us a very clear view of exactly where it's raining, because it's been dotting the bay area. not all of us are seeing it right now. wanted to give you a closer view of the rain that's moving across the richmond, san rafael bridge. that's going to be moving off to the north and east over toward vallejo. we've seen some of those showers moving over toward mt. diablo, the area of martinez, walnut creek and concord. some of the showers moving through around livermore, fremont and covering much of san jose, as well as ove parts of sunnyvale and moving toward showers moving through. it could be heavy at times. we're also watching out for the possibility that some of these cells may be packing some thunderstorms. there could be some brief, heavy downpours as well as small hail and some gusty winds. we'll be wa

. >> i'm scott mcgrew, in for marcus washington who has the day off. kari, you're talking about 83-mile-an-hour winds. >> but in a hurricane, you have sustained winds, but what we're seeing this morning are gusts. these really brief bursts of high winds and so it's going to be dangerous for elevations above 1,000 feet and damaging winds are possible today and tomorrow as well. this may be a prolonged wind event and near record high temperatures again today with the fire danger that we don't normally see during the mnuary well as high winds and with the gusty winds we'll be watching out especially in the areas shaded in red for the potential of those gusts topping 60 miles per hour. as we mentioned, we've already seen that. i'll be talking more about this coming up. let me give you a quick overview of what's ang out there on the roads this morning as we get a look at our traffic maps. no major problems for the commute on this holiday, and we want to make sure you're aware of high winds so keep a tight grip on that steering wheel. we'll talk about what's

i'm scott mcgrew. president trump facing political catastrophe. the house warns he's 24 hours from facing his second impeachment, something no other president in american history has faced. his own vice president is under pressure to declare him incompetent or incapable of leadership. the president left for texas this morning, the first time we've seen him since the day of the attack on the capitol. he denied any responsibility for e action by his supporters. a lot is going to happen today. the house will vote on a resolution to urge vice president pence to use the 25th amendment to remove the president. it's unlikely he will. but either way, that starts a 24-hour clock with a vote on impeachment coming tomorrow. the final papers are already drawn up, charging the president with inciting violence against the government of the united states. meantime, the president's finances face their own catastrophe. breaking this morning, deutsche bank is cutting off president trump as a customer. he and his company owe the bank more than $300 million. in the p

. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. marcus washington has some time off. all eyes on kari and the high winds. they're just incredible, kari. >> yes, we had a wind gust over 83 miles per hour, and we're seeing winds over 80 miles per hour as well in parts of the east bay and north bay hills. now, these are the upper elevations experiencing winds like this. a lot of this in the valley are just getting a light breeze now and then but the winds are picking up throughout today and that comes along with some near record high temperatures. we have that as well as a high fire danger. you want to make sure you're prepared for these high winds today. you charged up your cell phone and all of your devices, just in case you have a power outage and make sure you have some batteries and flashlights nearby as well as some food and water. secure those outdoor items as well as the potential of downed trees that will be possible today. so as you get out on the roads this morning, we are still looking at those high wind gusts. you may have to keep a tight grip on the steerin

i'm scott mcgrew in for marcus washington. those winds are pushing fast-moving fires, keeping bay area crews busy. road crews are clearing debris from fallen trees, trying to restore power to hundreds of people as well. several fires sparked overnight outside livermore was one of them. there you see that fire. meteorologist kari hall has been glued to her equipment, tracking this microclimate weather alert. kari, when will the wind die down? >> it's still pretty gusty out there, scott. although the high-wind warning has been allowed to expire, we are now seeing fires in the santa cruz mountains, as we get a look at what's going on here. some of our alert fire cameras picking up on these fires that have recently been sparked. there's not one but several of them in the santa cruz mountains. we'll continue to monitor this situation as we are still getting those high wind gusts across the bay area. some of those gusts reach over 90 miles per hour earlier this morning. so, this was the fear, that we could see some fire sparking acr

scott mcgrew, one of our viewers wants to know, does game stop get anything out of this? >> yeah, that is such a good question, kris. we got back to that on twitter and also here, the answer is no. companies don't actually own stock in themselves as strange as that sounds. the long answer is, it can, because the company can print up new shares and sell them. normally this is very frowned upon because it dilutes the value of existing shares and has the potential to upset investors. but in this case, the price is so high and so disconnected with reality, it couldn't hurt. game stop could use that money to pay down debt, for instance. the correct term for all of this is secondary offering. it's pretty rare. tesla does it, fairly often actually, but it's generally frowned upon. the other player in this drama is robinhood. that's the app that so many people are using to buy game stop shares. robinhood's ceo was on cnbc this morning, trying to explain why yesterday the company actually barred its own customers from using robinhood to buy game stop shares. >> really in unprecede

i'm scott mcgrew. mayors from the largest 21 cities in america turning to the incoming biden administration for help with administering the covid-19 vaccine. san francisco's london breed, san jose's sam liccardo and libby schaaf signing a letter sent to biden, the letter says cities are ready to help reach the goal of knock clating 100 million americans in the new president's first 100 days but they need direct access to the vaccines, the same way that states and counties do. the mayors also asked for money to do that especially so they could target disadvantaged communities. the cdc and california governor newsome encouraging counties to include anyone 65 and older on the list of people getting a vaccination. contra costa county listened. the county announcing anyone 65 and older can sign up online. >>> here's some video of lines at disney land but this is not waiting for a ride. this is waiting for a vaccination. orange county plans to give thousands of shots here every day. nbc's kris sanchez has a

i'm scott mcgrew in for marcus washington. big story today, wind and weather creating potential fire danger. we have a team of people covering this, this morning. on the conditions, let's start with meteorologist kari hall. good morning. >> and, scott, it is crazy that we are talking about fire conditions in january. this is supposed to be the middle of our rainy season, but we haven't gotten a lot of it. now we're dealing with very dry vegetation and the winds coming in. and we have an elevated fire risk for the bay area. now some of our mountain wind gusts have already been over 80 miles an hour and for our valleys, we'll start to feel those winds going into this evening. so all you need are some type of spark that could really make things go out of control really quickly under these conditions. as we look at what's going on, right now most of us are feeling a light wind in some of the valleys. then you can see how that wind is funneling through the delta as we look at fairfield and even toward napa. 43-mile-per-hour winds.
