nbc bay area's cheryl hurd just arrived on the scene what can you tell us? >> reporter: atmosphere we are at that jacqueline road exit that you're talking about. this wind is wreaking havoc here. as you can see, the chp has that jacqueline road entrance onto 680 blocked off and they're diverting cars off of the freeway to the city streets. this all started around 9:00 when a fire broke out at country club drive in the milpitas hills. at this point we don't know what sparked the fire, but the way the wind is blowing, you can only imagine that the wind had something to do with it. several streets in the area evacuated. we talked to one evacuee who says that he was told to get out quickly. >> yeah, i think there's a fire, and they called me to get out. i realized it was bad, the smoke. it's really, really weird to see all the smoke. >> reporter: when one of our photographers arrived on the scene, he saw the chp putting out flares and letting people know they needed to get off the freeway. coming down here from the east bay, the road was blocked off. we were tol

nbc bay area bay area's tom jensen is near antioch on bethel island. >> reporter: the devastation from the windstorm is tremendous. the entire g dock, the largest dock here at the new life marina, was toppled over, parts of it thrown all the way down the hill at least 75 yards. some of the boats still tangled in the twisted steel and timbers. more than a dozen 50-foot slips destroyed. >> it' a catastrophe $250,000 to rebuild. >> reporter: it benefits the new life dream center, a substance abuse non-profit. some of the tenants rode out the storm. >> it was just very, very scary. it was real windy and the docks were shaking and the boats were shaking. >> reporter: all the major damage was at g dock where everything was ripped apart. >> it felt like a war zone. >> reporter: you said you didn't know if you were going to live or die? >> yes. >> reporter: steve's 1955 matthews sedan was in the middle of it. >> i was asleep. the wind had been blowing for hours. >> reporter: he says he knew his boat would survive so he settled if as the dock was being ripped away. >> it wasn't a great deal to

nbc bay area's marianne favro first broke this story and joins us now from that kaiser in san jose with the exclusive details. marine. an >> reporter: raj, employees here say they're devastated by the loss of the longtime employee. they say she worked as a registration clerk in the emergency department here. known for her smile and her devotion tohe job. kaiser says it just completed a deep cleaning of the entire emergency department at its san jose medical center, which included swab testing of surfaces. employees are also being tested after an outbreak that infected at least 44 staff members with covid. one of them died yesterday from covid complications. today an employee, who asked not to be identified, reflected on the department's loss. >> she was always consistent with a smile and would never show face to the stresses that we go through and just a tremendous role model for others to follow. it's just really unfortunate, really sad that this outbreak led to her passing. >> reporter: the registration clerk had worked in the emergency department christmas day. while the exact source
