kristen: dr. durbin, i would like to bring you in on this point because we heard the dean rothman talked about the fact that hopkins is currently conducting genomic sequencing on these new strains. help us to understand, do these current vaccines offer protection from these strains or other mutations? how should we think about that? dr. durbin: i think what is important to know about these vaccines, and particularly the mrna vaccines and the effective vaccines, they showed the body the genetic material of the virus' spike protein. how they are delivered, your body sees that protein and makes an immune response. the important point to remember is that your body is recognizing thousands of pieces. these mutations are a few parts of a very large protein. there have been studies in the laboratory for both the moderna vaccine on the pfizer vaccine to see how well anti-bodies that the body makes using these vaccines, how well those antibodies bind to and activate virus. what we have seen is, although th

let's go to chief white house correspondent kristen welker right now. kristen, what sort of reaction are you getting to what we have seen thus far? >> well, former president trump's allies believe this has been a very strong presentation so far by the legal team. they think that this was an important reset from everything that hallie was just talking about, that first appearance by the legal team which disappointed the former president, and so now they watch and wait to see what happens in these final remaining hours. i do think, lester, it's worth taking a step back and noting that all of this is unfolding against the backdrop of a republican party that is sharply splintered right now. we know just six republican senators voted to say that, yes, these proceedings were even constitutional, so that, of course, gives us a potential indication of what we might see in a final vote. but behind the scenes there's a lot more discord. we know that there are a number of republicans who, for example, might vote to acquit former president trump but who still feel

>> hi, kristen. yes, former san diego mayor kevin faulconer was at abraham lincoln high school today. one of the schools that is still closed through this pandemic. faulconer is using the issue to reopen schools to make his case against governor newsom. that said, even faulconer faces his own challenges. >> reporter: republican kevin faulconer made his first campaign stop in san francisco today, doubling down on his number one critique of governor gavin newsom. >> i'm here at abraham lincoln high school because this school should be open. >> reporter: the former san diego mayor has made reopening schools the focal point of his campaign. he says san francisco has spent too much time focusing on renaming schools instead of getting kids back in the classroom. he blames newsom for not getting the job done. would you issue an executive to call for schools reopening? >> i would bring all powers of the governor's open to bear to get our schools safely reopened. >> reporter: some could say this is sort of go

kristen welker, at the white house. thank you. let me move to leigh ann caldwell. i want to shift gears away from the covid debate, and more of what's going on between mcconnell and mccarthy. and i guess it's this. did mitch mcconnell throw a wrench into kevin mccarthy's plans for this week? or did he provide him cover for what kevin mccarthy would like to do this week? >> reporter: that's an interesting take, chuck. i'm not totally sure. what we know is it is a dramatic contrast between what mitch mcconnell has said about the dynamics of the republican party and what kevin mccarthy has said as well. i think that mcconnell is trying to, of course, win back the majority in 2022 and he's worried about the path that house republicans continue to go down understanding that that is a threat to the senate majority for republicans moving forward. but i don't even know that all senate republicans are on the same page as mcconnell. i spoke to senator rick scott of florida who is the new chairman of the republican campaign committee, and i asked him about marjorie taylor gre
