look at this congress. there are over 140 democratic and republican women in the house and senate, the most ever in the history of our country. that translates to work we are doing in this chamber to better the lives of women and girls. today, we voted to pass the equal rights amendment and the violence against women reauthorization act. these are steps in the right direction. we have come a long way, baby, toward full equality. but we still have work to do. we unfortunately have a system in america that often suppresses women and does not support women. but we know that a woman is like a teabag, like eleanor roosevelt said, you never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water. and i know for a fact women have continued to stand up against every barrier. point to this pandemic and you see how women, especially women of color, have borne the brunt of this health and economic crisis. but we keep moving it we will continue in this congress to fight for the women in america. this is our responsibility.

she chairs the veteran affairs committee in the eighties congress and the 83rd congress. when the control flip-flopped back and forth between republicans and democrats. her experience and we see a couple of pictures here, in this one she is having a radio debate with mary norton of new jersey. this is in 1926, and these to really become in many respects, the dean's of women in congress for several decades. mary norton is a democrat, she came up through politics in jersey city new jersey, her mentor was frank, i am the law, hague. he promoted her career, and she comes into the house in 1925, the same year as edith norris rogers. the interesting thing about her is that she like rodgers, and other women from this generation, she really pursued a strategy of gaining power in the house by assimilating. they did not push women's issues per se, and they try to minimize gender differences, and norton was extremely successful moving up the committee leadership ladder. she cheered for congressional committees by the time she retired in the 19 fifties. one of them was the labor comm

she sent this petition to congress. she was a teacher. she argues that as a wage earning woman she has to pay equal taxes with men. as a non voter of course has no voice, excuse, me in how those tax dollars are spent, she further states that with acknowledge superior opportunities, she has been obliged to teach for one third of the wages afforded to a male teacher at the same school. i just have to point out that this petition was sent to congress in 1979. so 140 years ago this year, we were already arguing that women needed to vote for equal eight -- wages. of course as a wage earning woman, women like emily barber from their working experience, it was a very clear how vulnerable women were without the vote. one of the other ways that women came to fight for their right to vote was through engagement on other reform issues. lots of women were engaged in the anti slavery movement, the temperance movement, as well as the consumption of alcohol and other educational, public health, and social reforms. one of the most important endorsements
